Assignment objectives
On completion of this assignment the student should be able to:
• Apply some of the concepts around team development to a case study situation;
• Understand the benefits of having an effective and motivated project team;
• Present written and visual concepts and ideas in a design report.
Assignment brief
• You will need to identify a project that you are familiar with OR you can make an assumption of the case background and description. It can also be a composite of several projects. If confidentiality is an issue some aspects of the project can be disguised and even changed. If you wish you can also refer to the same case study that was used for assignment one.
• Complete this assignment individually
Assignment activities
The project and its context need to be described and documented. Project scope, current schedule, major phases, resources, suppliers and contractors, project structure and organization in order to provide sufficient context to the problem to be resolved.
• As a project manager you believe that time spent on teambuilding will be useful. Outline your proposed plans for this in detail. What is proposed, how it would be implemented, what are the assumptions behind it? Team building is not just about social events, however they can be useful.
• You also believe that it will be beneficial to assess team performance from time to time. Outline your approach to doing this. Note the emphasis here is on the team not individuals although you may include that if you think relevant.
• There can be two scenarios above, the first where you are focusing on your internal team, and the second where you propose to extend the teambuilding to a wider group to include contractors. This will require a lot more justification, both to management and to the contractor’s management.
• What is the likely effort and cost to implement this teambuilding / performance review approach? • What are the expected benefits from doing all the above, as you need to sell to management why you are investing time and money in such an activity. What potential problems might your approach prevent? A risk based approach could be useful. Management are sceptical and think that you should just “get on with the job”.
It is expected that your report with all the above information will be not more than 10 pages (excluding cover page, executive summary, Table of content and references).
3 Assignment 3 – Reflective Learning Report (Individual)
Assignment objectives
On completion of this assignment the student should be able to:
• Demonstrate their competency development in the subject matter of the course;
• Show that they can reflect on their learning and apply it to real life situations;
• Work autonomously, and
• Present written and visual concepts and ideas in a design report.
Assignment brief
• At the end of the semester each student is to submit a personal assignment of not more than 10 pages (not including cover pages and references) called a Reflective Learning Report (or RLR).
• The RLR is to document in section 1 what you personally have learned from the course including the team work. You may reference the discussion forums, team activities, and other literature you have read, and even reference your own organisation and how it performs (or not) the issues raised by the assignment topics. Also there is an opportunity for your own observations on application of the learnings to the work environment (section 2).
