Highlights
Case study number 1
Your Company’s Board has approved the construction of a $35M one, two and three bedroom home unit development based on a real estate feasibility analysis. This analysis indicated that the unit development’s success will depend on the time and cost to build the units, the quality of construction, the management of the development risks, and obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals and complying with their conditions.
The Company’s Chief Executive Officer has asked that your Group write the project’s Stakeholder Management Plan and the project’s Project Communication Plan for the planning phase to ensure that the project is well managed from the start. They would like your Group to use the limited information available and its expert judgement to provide the required plans as they require that the management of the project stakeholders and communications be particularly well documented from the start.
Case study number 2
The Director General of the Government’s Department of Regional Development (DRD) has charged your project team with implementing a large and important dam project for the Government. This project addresses some of the fundamental elements of project management in general and project communication in particular. It includes a project that will enable the region’s industrial and agricultural sectors to grow and create employment. To realise these benefits, the Government is very aware that the many project stakeholders must be effectively managed; that all communications about the project and its’ progress professionally handled and that the project’s success and reputation of the Minister and the Government could be at risk.
The Government has been extensively lobbied to secure long-term water supplies for a region with high unemployment, minimum existing local industry and a shrinking agriculture industry. Feasibility studies indicate that if the supply of sufficient water in guaranteed, the private sector will invest significant amounts of money into new industries. As well, the private sector will invest in the redevelopment of existing industries and significantly upgrade the region’s agricultural base.
The project is the construction of a dam. This dam will result in regional employment during construction and long-term regional employment growth. It will also assist the Government in reaching its regional policy objectives. The project is located in an area that minimises the dam’s environmental impact and the amount of private land that will be flooded. However, the project requires the support of four local government areas and there are vocal sections of these communities that do not support the construction of a dam.
Feasibility studies indicate that a Government investment of approximately $150million will result in significant economic, social and community benefits. The Government will also have opportunity for significant reform to its water resources policy and the sale of water rights.
