Assignment 4: Digital Model (50%) Assignment Brief Students are required to produce a digital model using Sketchup of a building addressed in the lecture series, or a building produced by one of the architects discussed in the lecture series. You may not select a building already modelled in Enabling Skills (ARCH 1080). A list of excluded buildings is attached below. The building must be presented and analysed according to:

• Context – the immediate surrounds of the building

• Building plan arrangement and rationale: Function, progression through spaces etc. This should be in the form of colour coding placed on a separate layer. • Space: section and manipulation of light. Choose sections and “scenes” with shadow settings to emphasise the space and light qualities of the building. • Elevations: components (doors/windows) and external elements.

• Analysis of a specific aspect of the building. This can take a number of forms. You will need to show two of the following types of analysis:

- Show the construction sequence of the building

- Using a series of viewpoints to show how the building is a perceptual sequence

- Demonstrate the grouping, linking and organisation of functions within a building - Show how the physical context and/or landform has shaped or influenced the building form

Tips for Modelling:

• Avoid very large and complex geometries, especially detailed components which have been copied many times – if the model runs slowly on your computer, it will run slowly for the tutors, because Sketchup does not support parallel processing.

• The opening scene or view must be saved without shadows to enable quicker loading.

• Ideal maximum file size should be around 35MB.

• Consider presenting in a style without extensions or profiles – these look the cleanest.

• The building and all its detailing must be your own work, but using furniture, light fittings, sculptures and paintings or trees from other sources is permitted. Make sure they are carefully selected to match the intention and details of the building – in other words, what would the architect have chosen? You must list the components you have taken from other sources in a separate Word file titled “Resources Used”. Criteria The assignment will be marked according to:

• Neatness and organisation of the model

• Accuracy of the building representation

• Usefulness of the chosen “scenes” i.e. how well do they convey the point they are meant to make?

• Degree of detail. Models should show enough detail to understand the thickness of walls, the dimensions of architectural elements such as columns, doors and windows, stairs and handrails. Elements such as fittings (toilets, basins) and kitchen benches should be shown where necessary. It is important to be consistent with the level of detail you include. The model should only deal with visible form, so hidden structure should be omitted.

• Graphic elements used to stress circulation, room functions or organisation such as grouping of services etc. These must be placed on a separate layer. Some graphic elements to consider: - Annotation: note(s) by way of explanation. - Diagrams: graphic(s) by way of explanation. - Sequencing: eg: assemble the building in sequence; take the building apart in sequence. - Translation: eg: transform one plan into another. - Animation

• Analysis of the building demonstrating your chosen aspect. This is an important part of the task and needs consideration in deciding what to emphasize, and how to do it clearly.
