You are to research the genre you select, and write an essay exploring what you think it is necessary to know about this genre in order to be able to use examples of it for historical research — to appreciate the aims of a particular work, and to be able to identify and extract information about both the composer of the work, about his/her historical context, and about the topic of the work. Your essay is not exclusively about the individual texts we have in the Unit Reader, but you should refer to those texts as examples of the genre concerned: how it exemplifies key features, or how it differs from conventions in the genre. The focus is on the genre; the examples you have are sources for illustrating your points. You are encouraged to search out other examples of your genre from the period.
