Abstract

This essay aims to discuss the topic of free will and support the argument that contextual situations can alter human autonomy and an individual’s free will.  It will briefly cover the notoriously dubbed ‘The Problem of Free Will’ and discuss the stand points of all groups of thought regarding free will, i.e. Compatibilists, Determinists, Hard Determinists and Libertarians.  The arguments that these groups represent will then help to shape the fundamental concept of compatibilism and strengthen the argument being proposed.  

Introduction

The idea of choice has been a fundamental belief that we, as humans, have assumed we possess since the dawn of society.  The engine that allows us to drive our ability to decide between choices, is what is known as Free Will.  A topic that many philosophers, both classic and modern, still question to this day.  Does free will exist and if so, are we simply able to live our lives without constraint when making choices? Or is free will nothing but an illusion that we cling to in order to convince ourselves that we are truly free?  Or furthermore, alternatively, can these two beliefs be conceptualised together, allowing for an answer that is not as simple as the question is made out to be?  The questioning of free will lead to many beliefs being discussed amongst philosophers throughout history, which in turn, created the topic of discussion known today as ‘Problem of Free Will’.  This brought together many theories, which were labelled as separate groups of thought.  These groups include Libertarians, Determinists, Hard Determinists and Compatibilists.
