• It is analytical, not descriptive, and it must logically lead the readers to a  certain conclusion the author is making. 

• It is written with not only professionals in mind but also the general  public reader who could be a layman on the particular topic; hence the  use of technical jargons and abstract languages tend to be minimized. 

Sourcing 

A commentary, as mentioned above, is more than an opinion piece. What  distinguishes a commentary written in the policy think-tank context, from one  that is published by news agencies, tends to be the amount of research rigour.  

While journalists might not necessarily be versed in the background knowledge and contemporary issues of a particular topic, policy analysts are expected to  write commentaries in an informed, analytical manner that is grounded firmly  on thorough research and at least basic background understanding of the said  topic.  

While no citations are required in a commentary, students are urged to  incorporate well-research facts and data in the piece to back the argument.  This can come in the form of in-text mention of the data, and where possible,  the student may direct the reader to the sources using hyperlinks.
