Task

Select a regular activity, such as commuting, eating, attending a leisure activity, engaging in a hobby, or working a part-time job, and keep a journal on it for one week. Your task is to write a sociological essay based on these observations, examining the interactions between individual behaviours and societal influences

1. Pick an Activity: Choose a regular routine or activity that sparks your interest.

2. Journal for a Week: Document the activity each day or every time you do it. Note your actions, emotions and any societal rules or expectations you encounter.

3. Analyse Your Observations: Reflect on your activity, focusing on:

• Social and Cultural Norms and Conformity: How do unwritten social rules shape your activity? What norms are followed or challenged?
• Institutional Influences: How do family, education and media subtly influence your choices and actions in this activity?
• Class, Gender, Race and Social Inequality: Reflect on the impact of class, gender and race on your chosen activity.

Essay Outline & Strategy

In your essay, begin with an introduction that outlines the regular activity you’re analysing and how you plan to examine it through a sociological lens. Mention that you will delve into how norms, socialisation, and other social structures influence this activity. Next, include a paragraph about how you collected your observations. Then, in the body of the essay, organise it into three sections (you can use subheadings). Each section should explore a different aspect of your observations—such as social norms, institutional influences, and the intersections of class, gender and race. Within these sections, ensure to include sentences that directly link your observations to broader sociological theories. Conclude by summarising your insights, emphasising how you have demonstrated the relevance of using the sociological imagination to understand our daily lives.
