1.0 Company Background

Asia Piling Co Pte Ltd. is a construction company in Singapore founded in 2017 that specializes in piling work. As any construction company, it uses a lot of water resources. To comply with local environmental regulations, it has set up a wastewater treatment plant in Singapore so that it can recycle or reuse the water for its construction activities, which promises ultra-clean, high-grade water.

2.0 Proposed Study

An incident at a project site on September 26, 2020, caused a yellow discharge into Upper Seletar reservoir. The purpose of this project is to collect water samples from this site and water sources from other reservoirs and conduct a comparative assessment of water pollution levels. The author will compare the water samples for pH and presence of metallic impurities such as lead, arsenic, zinc, copper, chromium, manganese, and nickel. These metallic impurities pose a serious environmental hazard and can have negative health consequences for humans (Wang & Yang, 2016). Heavy metal concentration in water is linked to gastrointestinal, muscular, reproductive, neurological health disorders, which explains why this study is relevant. Besides comparative assessment, the author will compare these values with safe limits proposed by the country’s regulatory body, National Environment Agency (NEA).

Asia‌ ‌Piling‌ ‌Co‌ ‌Pte‌ ‌Ltd.‌ ‌is‌ ‌a‌ ‌construction‌ ‌company‌ ‌in‌ ‌Singapore‌ ‌founded‌ ‌in‌ ‌2017‌ ‌that‌ ‌specialises‌ ‌in‌ ‌piling‌ ‌work.‌ ‌Like‌ ‌any‌ ‌construction‌ ‌company,‌ ‌it‌ ‌uses‌ ‌a‌ ‌lot‌ ‌of‌ ‌water‌ ‌resources.‌ ‌To‌ ‌comply‌ ‌with‌ ‌local‌ ‌environmental‌ ‌regulations,‌ ‌it‌ ‌has‌ ‌set‌ ‌up‌ ‌a‌ ‌wastewater‌ ‌treatment‌ ‌plant‌ ‌in‌ ‌Singapore‌ ‌so‌ ‌that‌ ‌it‌ ‌can‌ ‌recycle‌ ‌or‌ ‌reuse‌ ‌the‌ ‌water‌ ‌for‌ ‌its‌ ‌construction‌ ‌activities,‌ ‌which‌ ‌promises‌ ‌ultra-clean,‌ ‌high-grade‌ ‌water.‌ ‌ ‌

2.0‌Proposed‌ ‌Study‌ ‌

An‌ ‌incident‌ ‌at‌ ‌a‌ ‌project‌ ‌site‌ ‌on‌ ‌September‌ ‌26,‌ ‌2020,‌ ‌caused‌ ‌a‌ ‌yellow‌ ‌discharge‌ ‌into‌ ‌the Upper‌ ‌Seletar‌ ‌reservoir.‌ ‌The‌ ‌purpose‌ ‌of‌ ‌this‌ ‌project‌ ‌is‌ ‌to‌ ‌collect‌ ‌water‌ ‌samples‌ ‌from‌ ‌this‌ ‌site‌ ‌and‌ ‌water‌ ‌sources‌ ‌from‌ ‌other‌ ‌reservoirs‌ ‌and‌ ‌conduct‌ ‌a‌ ‌comparative‌ ‌assessment‌ ‌of‌ ‌water‌ ‌pollution‌ ‌levels.‌ ‌The‌ ‌author‌ ‌will‌ ‌compare‌ ‌the‌ ‌water‌ ‌samples‌ ‌for‌ ‌pH‌ ‌and‌ ‌the presence‌ ‌of‌ ‌metallic‌ ‌impurities‌ ‌such‌ ‌as‌ ‌lead,‌ ‌arsenic,‌ ‌zinc,‌ ‌copper,‌ ‌chromium,‌ ‌manganese,‌ ‌and‌ ‌nickel.‌ ‌These‌ ‌metallic‌ ‌impurities‌ ‌pose‌ ‌a‌ ‌serious‌ ‌environmental‌ ‌hazard‌ ‌and‌ ‌can‌ ‌have‌ ‌negative‌ ‌health‌ ‌consequences‌ ‌for‌ ‌humans‌ ‌(Wang‌ ‌&‌ ‌Yang,‌ ‌2016).‌ ‌Heavy‌ ‌metal‌ ‌concentration‌ ‌in‌ ‌water‌ ‌is‌ ‌linked‌ ‌to‌ ‌gastrointestinal,‌ ‌muscular,‌ ‌reproductive,‌ ‌neurological‌ ‌health‌ ‌disorders,‌ ‌which‌ ‌explains‌ ‌why‌ ‌this‌ ‌study‌ ‌is‌ ‌relevant.‌ ‌Besides‌ ‌comparative‌ ‌assessment,‌ ‌the‌ ‌author‌ ‌will‌ ‌compare‌ ‌these‌ ‌values‌ ‌with‌ ‌safe‌ ‌limits‌ ‌proposed‌ ‌by‌ ‌the‌ ‌country’s‌ ‌regulatory‌ ‌body,‌ ‌National‌ ‌Environment‌ ‌Agency‌ ‌(NEA).‌ ‌ ‌

  ‌

3.0‌Aims‌ ‌and‌ ‌Objectives‌ ‌

The‌ ‌aim‌ ‌of‌ ‌this‌ ‌project‌ ‌is‌ ‌to‌ ‌assess‌ ‌water‌ ‌pollution‌ ‌caused‌ ‌by‌ ‌construction‌ ‌activities‌ ‌of‌ ‌Asia‌ ‌Piling‌ ‌Co‌ ‌Pte‌ ‌Ltd.‌ ‌The‌ ‌objectives‌ ‌of‌ ‌this‌ ‌project‌ ‌are:‌ ‌ ‌

1.To‌ ‌compare‌ ‌water‌ ‌pollution‌ ‌levels‌ ‌from‌ ‌the‌ ‌incident‌ ‌site‌ ‌and‌ ‌from‌ ‌other‌ ‌location‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌reservoir‌ ‌

2.To‌ ‌compare‌ ‌water‌ ‌pollution‌ ‌levels‌ ‌with‌ ‌safe‌ ‌limits‌ ‌proposed‌ ‌by‌ ‌a local‌ ‌regulatory‌ ‌body‌ ‌

3.To‌ ‌identify‌ ‌sources‌ ‌of‌ ‌pollutants‌ ‌and‌ ‌recommend‌ ‌changes‌ ‌to‌ ‌processes‌ ‌to‌ ‌improve‌ ‌

5.0 Potential challenges

A potential challenge to this project was securing permission to collect water samples from the company’s construction site. However, the author has already secured this permission before submitting this project proposal. Another potential challenge is to link the sources of pollutants with the findings of water pollution assessment. This can be a tricky task as construction activities cause significant pollution at different levels. Finding the source of metallic impurities at each stage will require a deep understanding of the construction process. The author will consult the project manager and supervisor for guidance on this part. Finally, the author will face challenge if the study’s findings are published and the company’s water pollution levels are extremely high. This will raise concerns among the employees about the adverse health effects of water pollution. To avoid this, the author will not use the company’s real name when publishing the study’s contents.
