Part B 1. Situation/context

A few years ago, Thomas purchased a 1600-hectare property for himself, located in the drier, flat plains country away from his father's holding. Thomas' property is comprised mostly of native grass pastures (generally known to be lower in nutritive value). Annual rainfall averages no more that 500mm and this occurs sporadically through the year. Temperatures are high in summer, often reaching mid-forties and winters are mild, often declining to as low as 10°C as a minimum. Pasture growth is relatively similar throughout the year, though a small flush will be seen in spring and towards the start of summer, from where it declines gradually to minimal growth over winter, where there is only a small amount of growth.

Thomas runs a 500 head Hereford breeding herd on his property. He uses Angus bulls (one bull per 20 cows, that he buys during August stud sales) to cross with these Hereford cows to produce both males and females that he sells through the saleyards at 12 to 18 months of age, depending on feed availability – he notices their growth is slow due to low pasture growth. Thomas currently buys in hay in October and feeds this to his young animals after weaning until they are sold to try and supplement their feed intake. He also has Hereford bulls (also buying these during August sales) that he puts over the best of his Hereford cows to produce his Hereford female replacements. The male portion of the straight Hereford cross is grown out and sold through the saleyards at the same time; however, he always receives a lower price for these animals due to them being leaner and lighter in weight than the cross bred animals. Joining occurs in early October for 12 weeks and calving starts in early July. Marking occurs at 3 months of age in October and weaning occurs in February at 7 months of age.
