Background to the topic

Considerable research has shown that there are differing links between SWB and the personality traits of extroversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience. These differing findings may be attributable to a number of factors, including the different ways in which both SWB and personality have been defined and measured. It is therefore important to examine whether the relationships between SWB and personality traits are consistent across different measurements and samples of participants. Extending research into other populations helps to establish whether there is a universal connection between SWB and personality. Few researchers have considered retirees and fewer still in an Australian context.
