Picture books and similar literature for children use both image and written text in sophisticated ways, to convey their story. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate an understanding of the role of image and text in conveying the style of the text, engaging the reader-viewer and communicating the meaning of stories.

After reading and viewing the chosen book, write an 800 word essay addressing the key techniques and tools used by the author/illustrator including:

• Brief introduction to the book. Mention the characters, setting and storyline. Briefly describe the style of the book (humorous, poignant, adventurous etc.) and the theme or significant message that the story communicates.

• Statement of the type of image-text interrelationship. Do the image and text correspond, enhance or contrast each other? Give examples from the text and use references (from the Reading List) to support your claims.

• Explanation of the image-text interrelationships in further detail by analysing the techniques used by the author and illustrator to engage the reader, convey the style of the book and communicate the theme/significant message of the story.

  • Make links to the unit content regarding the use of language and illustrations. Use the taught metalanguage (terminologies or vocabulary).

  • Analyse the images in terms of how the reader-viewer is introduced to the character/s, setting and plot and how the mood of the story is conveyed. Include examples from the written text and illustrations to help support your analysis.
