Assignment Task

Welcome to the electrifying challenge of revamping the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) website! Get ready to power up your programming skills and embark on a mission to merge multiple data sets, unlocking the secrets of power generation and usage across the Australian landscape.

So, here's the deal: this assignment is your solo performance opportunity, your time to shine. This assignment is to be completed individually – no group hugs, no sharing secrets! So, while the temptation to brainstorm with your friends might be strong, resist the urge! This is important because there are many different design options, and we want to read about yours!

You’re working to transform several clunky databases into a slick, user-friendly hub where energy fanatics can geek out over the power generation and usage stats like never before. The AEMO currently have several data sets that need to be merged so that they can extract useful information about power generation and usage from each state/territory around the country. Your task is to design the new database which will eventually be used to supply data to the AEMO website so that people can explore the data and make valid market decisions. At present, the data is stored across multiple databases and can only be viewed across multiple websites.

The current database holds information about different types of generation (renewable vs fossil fuel) and the different forms of consumption (from household to large battery storage charging to maintain the network). Other things recorded include consumption/export of power between states/territories, the transmission connections (Interconnectors) used etc. In addition, the AMEO would like to capture and store some extra data including (but not limited to):

  • Future sources of generation like Hydrogen, Nuclear and amazing things yet to be discovered!
  • Future sources of consumption like energy-guzzling Companies, electric cars etc.

National Energy Market

  • Dispatch Overview (note the interconnector values)
  • Price and Demand
  • Fuel Mix (renewable vs fossil fuel – see below)

Live Australian Electricity Generation Statistics

  • Generation statistics graphs for each state/territory
  • Consumption statistics by category for each state/territory

Climate Information

  • Min/Max temperature for relevant suburbs/locations in each state for each day
  • Min/Max wind speed (km/hr) and average Wind Speed (incl direction)
  • Any other observations you think are relevant to renewable energy/fossil fuel electricity generation

Tasks

Below is a list of the tasks you need to complete:

  1. Design a Domain Model Diagram using UML Notation
    • Capture all the relevant data and reduce the possibility of anomalies. Where possible, re-use existing record information
    • Provide Justification for your design decisions.
    • There are multiple ways to design this database, you need to justify why you chose specific table structures and associations.

The design needs to meet the 3rd normal form. Adequate justification must be provided for tables/attributes that do not meet these criteria giving examples with the reasoning.
