Background
Many organizations have been making use of automated systems to replace conventional methods of performing tasks. One of the biggest advantages offered by automation has been smart ticketing procedures. Conventional methods of car parking systems would make use of a person who would be required to manually note down various parameters related to a car park such as details of the vehicle, parking area allotted, details of the person driving it, the time at which the vehicle entered the parking and its exit time. This method has been prone to several drawbacks. One such drawback has been the excessive time taken up to enter the details every time a car enters the premise and cancelling the details once it left. This led to long queues. Hence, these systems have been taken over by digital systems which can through various sensors enter the details into their systems and autonomously calculate the fee for the parking.
Aim
The aim of this project is to automate the procedure of generating parking tickets and also the payment process. This project makes use of cameras as a sensor to the automated car parking payment system which can capture the image of the vehicle number plate and generate a receipt with the in time for the vehicle. The systems also auto-generates the bill based on the exit time once the receipt is scanned again by the driver when leaving the parking area. Additional sensors are also used which can capture the image of the person driving the vehicle when entering the parking area so that it can compare it with the image taken while the car exists and make sure that the person entering the parking area can be the only one leaving with it. Hence, reducing the chances of theft.
Objectives
The objectives of this project can be summarised in the below points:
1. To develop an automated car parking payment system.
2. To integrate multiple camera systems to a microprocessor and capture images in real time.
3. To autonomously calculate the parking bill based on the entry and exit time.
4. To capture the image of the vehicle driver and the passenger and compare it with the feed when the vehicle exits the parking space to avoid chances of theft and also notify the operator in cases of deviations.
Main Methods
The main background of this project depends on the use of cameras and microcontrollers to automate the process of generating tickets for a car parking system. The entry point for the parking area is equipped with two cameras placed on opposite sides which are used to capture the images of the person driving the vehicle and the passenger beside them. Once the vehicle approaches the parking entry point, the automated system captures and stores the images from the two cameras of the driver and the passenger and with the help of micro camera placed beneath captures an image of the number plate. It then generates a receipt which has an image of the number plate along with the time of entry which is autonomously calculated internally. Once the person wishes to take the vehicle out of the parking area, the automated system can be used to scan the receipt generated by it. Upon scanning, the system reads the entry time and calculates the bill to be paid. The system accordingly notifies the operator about the mode of payment. Once the vehicle approaches the exit point, the cameras capture images of the driver and the passenger and compare it with the earlier saved image of the driver and the passenger. This is done so as to assure that the vehicle cannot be stolen from the parking area.
