Ethics Case Study

Key Aim

The aim of this exercise is to closely study a real set of events where the use of computers has contributed to an ethical issue and answer, in detail, a series of questions about how the events and ethical issues are linked. We start this exercise with preparation - followed by a series of questions that you answer using insights and information drawn from your research.

Preparation

There are two key steps for preparation.
First, watch (or re-watch) the Ethics in Computing Video in Echo 360 for this course. Take notes from the video and write down the points that are less clear to you (or are most interesting) and briefly research these concepts.
Second at the end of this page is a set of links that describe real cases where an ethical breach arose involving computers or software. There are also some links (marked below) where broad issues are discussed which are not individual stories but provide a starting point to look for related stories. Select an a case that is of interest to you and read the article. Look at the questions below. Note, that when you answer the questions it is expected that you will have explored a number of sources related to the story (it is rare that one source provides a comprehensive overview). Be prepared to look at more sources as you answer the questions.

Questions

Hint: Read all the questions before answering any questions - it could save time.
Write a document (submitted as a PDF) that answers the following questions. Mark the number of the question clearly in each of your answers. Marks will be awarded for the clarity, accuracy and precision of your answers. Feel free to use diagrams, figures, tables, charts to illustrate points if it makes the answer easier to understand. The suggested word limit is given with each question heading.

Question 1 - The Event (300 words - 6 marks)

Briefly describe (with references or links) the event you have selected. Describe what happened over time, who was involved and how computers were involved in the issues. Give memorable labels to the key events and entities to make it easier to reference these later.

Question 2 - The Breach (100 words - 3 marks)

Briefly name and describe the ethical breach being considered (these might also be legal breaches but they don't have to be). Briefly describe how these breaches lead to adverse outcomes under one Meta-Ethical framework and describe how the breach amounts to a lapse under one Normative ethical framework.

Question 3 - The Actors (500 words - 7 marks)

Hint: there are several questions embedded below make sure you address each.
Name, again, the actors responsible for making decisions in this event and what those decisions were. Describe two alternative ethical frameworks (both at the level of Meta-ethics and Normative Ethics) that might be informing their decisions. Also, broadly describe other potential drivers that might reinforce or conflict with these ethics. What are the alternative actions that the actors involved could have pursued and how would the consequences have differed.

Question 4 - Your Approach (250 words - 4 marks)

Consider the role of one of the less powerful actors involved in the breach (or you could infer would be involved in the breach). For example, this might be a junior software developer tasked with implementing some of the actions. If you were in this role describe what actions you might take (in advance or at the time) to avoid being involved in the breach. Describe at least one backup approach (plan B) that you could apply if your first approach doesn't work.
