Task
You are currently working on the design of a New Art School for a Modern University. In your role as the consultant geotechnical engineer on the project you have two separate tasks for which you are responsible:
•The design of the basement excavation and foundation configuration
•An alternative design recommendation for a piled foundation option for a number of possible new buildings where the piles are installed from at or near the existing ground level
The first of these forms Part 1 of this coursework and the second Part 2.
PART 1
Basement Design and Construction
a)Use the existing ground information data to:
•Identify any geotechnical factors which will influence the construction of the basement excavation.
•Identify the main factors which will affect the long-term performance of the basement
•Make a fully reasoned recommendation on whether or not the basement can be constructed using ground bearing floor slabs.

b)On the basis of your findings, identify a suitable conceptual design for the car park foundations and illustrate this with an outline sketch or sketches of this.

c)Comment on the extent to which the requirement for a basement car park is likely to influence the overall design and construction of the building. This should include a statement, with reasons, as to whether you would advise on the use of this or an alternative approach to provision of car parking to be a preferred option at this particular site.

PART 2
Pile Design
Each student is to design a slightly different Pile, with variations in diameter and length.
your specific pile design:
•The pile length(8m) and diameter(0.60m)
•The pile cut-off level(0m)
a)Based on the available ground investigation data identify a suitable type of pile for installation at the site (driven, bored or CFA), giving clear reasons for your choice.

b)From the available data identify and list appropriate input parameters to the pile design, in each case giving a clear justification for the chosen parameters.

c)Carry out a pile design using the parameters identified in part (b) together with the relevant values of pile length, pile diameter and cut-off level (the level of the top of the pile) in order to produce pile capacity curves in accordance with EC-7 DA-1 LC1 and LC2 for:
•The worse case pile capacity
•The best case pile capacity
In each case you must identify the soil strata profile that you have used in the design and although you are looking at one specific length of pile you should produce a full capacity curve.

d)Based on your answer to part (c) produce an appropriate curve to predict the pile load-settlement behaviour, giving full details of your method of analysis and any assumptions you have made.
