Sodium (Na+)/Potassium (K+)-ATPase or Na+/K+ pump (NKP) is an active cation transport protein which is a category of the P-type. It is the most diverse ion-transports in living beings and is dependent on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for its function (Jorgensen, Håkansson & Karlish, 2003). Na+, K+ and ATP are the ligands which bind to these receptors and play many physiological roles in all animal cells (Tortora & Derrickson, 2017). Energy released by hydrolysing from ATP helps in moving ions against the concentration gradient to maintain the membrane potential and osmotic equilibrium (Rui, Artigas & Roux, 2016)

Biological Function

NKP plays a significant role in many physiological functions which include maintaining the resting membrane potential (RMP) of the neuron cell and helps to generate an action potential. A key factor that supports the RMP is an unequal concentration of various ions found in the cytosol and extracellular fluid. The cytosol is rich in potassium cation while the extracellular fluid is rich in sodium and chloride ions. Due to sodium leak channels, some sodium ions diffuse inside the cytosol; however, if theY are unchecked, they would destroy the membrane potential. Therefore, NKP pumps help in offsetting the sodium leak channels and thus help in maintains the RMP by pumping out the Na+ as fast as it leaks in (Tortora & Derrickson, 2017).
