Becoming a Sociologist - Understanding Poverty in the UK
Topic:
The topic of the report is ‘Understanding Poverty in the UK’ and the resources that you use to produce the report will be the tasks that you have completed in-class over the term.
The aim of the report is to help you understand how different sources of evidence can be combined together to produce a better understanding of a particular social issue. However, sociological/criminological understanding also involves assessing different perspectives on an issue and presenting an argument for the one that you find the most effective.
For example, in session 8 you will find out that there are different perspectives on poverty and you will be asked to take a position in an in-class debate and produce evidence to support your position.
The report should contain the following topic aspects; NOT as separate headings, but as part of the resources used:
‘The Sociological Imagination’ - how does the sociological imagination help you understand this issue? What is distinctive about this kind of understanding? How can you relate ‘private experience’ to ‘public issues’ in this case?
‘Research ethics’ here you reflect on the potential ethical issues that may arise when undertaking such a piece of research on poverty.
‘Visual Sociology’ - select an image that you think represents the issue of poverty and/or crime in the UK. Try and be imaginative in the choice of your image (e.g. it does not necessarily need to be a photograph of people). Explain why you have selected this image and how it helps us understand the issue.
‘Sociology & Social Policy’ - Ensure that you have read the chapter by Clarke & Cochrane ‘The Social Construction of Social Problems’ (in Saraga, E. (1998) Embodying the Social) and answered the questions that you were provided with in-class.
‘Debating Poverty’ - Use the ideas presented in the in-class debate to describe the different perspectives that are taken on the issue of poverty. Identify the perspective that you find the most persuasive and explain why you have chosen this perspective.
