Overview of the Assessment

Aim of the Case Study Assessment

The ‘Case Study’ assignment gives you a chance to explore the basic structure and process through which a psychological problem (behaviour, emotion, thought, etc.) may be explored, understood, and addressed in a clinical setting. The assessment allows you to demonstrate your understanding of the motivations behind a particular behaviour or emotion, plan an intervention to change the behaviour/emotion, describe your implementation of the plan, and provide an evaluation of the outcome. We also want you to include an appendix containing a graph or figure and the support material you have made use of, most importantly including the data collection or behaviour tracking sheets you used.

There are three aims for the Case Study:

• To encourage you to self-reflect upon the motivations behind your own behaviours, and triggers behind your emotions.
• To allow you to research and explore evidence-based methods for modifying a motivated behaviour or emotion.
• To introduce you to the basic process clinicians work through when attempting to understand and alter a motivated behaviour or emotion.

The key things we are looking for are:

Demonstration of your understanding of the sections of a clinical case study (putting the right information into the right sections).

• Demonstration of an appropriate breadth of assessment of the various factors that may influence the chosen behaviour/emotion
• A clear logical flow through the sections.
• Your intervention has to make sense given your assessment of the behaviour/emotion.
• You need to implement and evaluate the actual plan you describe in your ‘intervention design’ section.
• Adequate research justification of the intervention you have chosen.

Case Study Assessment Plan

This scaffolding workbook is designed to help you prepare and plan for your Case Study assignment. Complete the questions below to start exploring what behaviour/emotion you are wanting to change and how you want it to change. The text boxes give you an indication of how much to write.

While your responses will be evaluated, remember that the main purpose is to give you feedback and advice to ensure you’re well-prepared for the Case Study.

Questions

1. What is the motivated behaviour or emotional response you are aiming to change, and do you want to increase it or decrease it?

2. Is the above a ‘behaviour’ (an action other people could observe) or an emotion/feeling (an internal sensation or experience that can’t be observed by others)?

3. To assess your behaviour/emotion, write your thoughts on its history, current frequency, and the situations/contexts in which it does or does not occur (1 paragraph for each).

4. You are required to measure the behaviour/emotion for a week prior to implementing your intervention and continue the measurements during your intervention to see if the intervention has created a measurable change in the behaviour/emotion. Describe how you are planning to measure the behaviour/emotion. (1 short paragraph).

Assessment Requirements – Case Study

This case study assessment is designed to give students hands-on experience in understanding, assessing, and modifying a psychological behaviour or emotion. The key requirements include:

• Identifying a motivated behaviour or emotion to be increased or decreased.
• Classifying whether it is a behaviour (observable) or an emotion (internal experience).
• Assessing the behaviour/emotion in terms of history, frequency, and contexts in which it occurs.
• Measuring the chosen behaviour/emotion for at least one week before intervention, and continuing measurement during the intervention phase.
• Designing and implementing an intervention that logically aligns with the assessment findings.
• Evaluating outcomes based on measurable changes post-intervention.
• Research justification using evidence-based methods.
• Inclusion of supporting materials such as data collection sheets, behaviour tracking graphs, or figures as an appendix.

The assessment emphasises:

1. Demonstrating knowledge of case study structure.
2. Showing logical progression across sections.
3. Using appropriate research to support the intervention.
4. Evaluating outcomes with clarity and reflection.
