Assessment Task:

Assignment 2: Critical review of three readings

One of the things this course is about is helping you to become familiar with the extensive research literature that exists on people, place and design that you can draw on to inform and support your professional practice.

You need to be able to read critically and to identify the key points and major threads in anything you read. In this assignment you are asked to choose three readings from academic books or journals (i.e. not Wikipedia, not magazine articles or website discussions), read them and provide a short critique on their key points. These readings could be used to help to inform your response to the group project in assignment 3.

You have been provided with two reading lists for this course, both are available on Moodle. You can choose from these lists or you can do your own search for other academic readings relevant to the course. Make sure they are academic references. If they are not the right kind of literature, this could have a very poor impact on your marks for this assignment.

Your task is to choose three readings from the academic literature. They do not have to be related to each other. The task is NOT an essay. They can be three very different articles that do not have any connection between them.

TIPS:

• This is more than a simple summary or description of the content of your readings. A critical review is not the same as providing a summary of each article. A review means more than describing the content of the article you need to analyse it and reflect on it intellectually.

• You need to analyse and critique their main points and arguments.

• The assignment should read like a collection of reviews, not an essay.

• It should NOT be written in 1st person (i.e. ‘I’ think, ‘I’ feel). You are NOT giving me your personal opinion of the article

• It should be written formally in the 3 rd person.

• It should NOT contain any contractions eg. Don’t, can’t, won’t (too informal for this task).
