BACKGROUND

Common roofing materials in New Zealand are asphalt shingles, clay or concrete tiles, membrane, metal(copper/brass, galvanised steel, stainless, zinc/aluminium alloy-coated mind steel, pre-painted steel, corrugated/long-run steel), slate tiles, and timber shingles(ArchiPro, 2020).

The materials listed all have their advantages and disadvantages. The main features differentiating the different materials are durability, weight, waterproofing, and appeal. It is important that the design of the roof takes the local environmental conditions into account. Effective roof design will increase the life of the roof, make it more efficient, and can minimise the cost.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE

Based on the extreme climate, rain and wind in Southland, and many houses in this region were built in the late 1970s(Kbp, 2019) need roof replacements. This report will investigate the characteristics of different roofing materials and provide suggestions for roof design in Invercargill, New Zealand.

SCOPE

There are many different types of roofing materials available, and this report will focus only on roofing materials regularly used for residential roofs in New Zealand, specific to asphalt shingles and metal material. The analysis of this report will be made based on the climate in Invercargill, Southland.
