Highlights
Introduction
Set the scene, provide aims and rationale for your work, and provide the reader with a sense of where the project is going. Some students use a powerful quotation (fully referenced) to help introduce their work. In this section, you may want to refer to the literature/theory in your area. You may also wish to introduce a specific market, industry or company if appropriate. Some students also
like to set clear objectives at this stage, although others do this AFTER reviewing the academic literature (see below).
Literature review
Exploration of current theory and thinking in your area. This does not have to be headed “literature
review” and it may be incorporated into other sections such as a detailed Introduction. The important thing is that the reader understands that you are exploring current thinking in your topic area. Use sub-sections to move from the general to the specific. At the end of your review of literature, draw key conclusions. You may then wish to refer to those conclusions to provide rationale for your own research. Note that the literature review does not have to include only research papers. White papers, reports, internal documentation might bring some theoretical insight here.
Industry/Company profile
Some projects involve research in a particular market or industry or company. A summary of the key issues/features would be appropriate. Don’t forget to reference your sources. You should also consider using the appendices for the details of this section.
Research objectives
Now you understand the theory in your area, and the industry/market/company if appropriate, you can set your own primary research or further secondary research objectives and specific research questions.
NB: Some students may have already done this earlier in the work.
Research methodology (Primary, Secondary or Case Study)
This section should detail how you plan to answer your objectives. It should include rationale, exploration of alternatives, and potential limitations.
Research findings
In this section, you should include both a report of the findings and analysis of those findings. These may be in the form of graphs, summary of qualitative discussions (using verbatim quotations), case study findings or summary of secondary findings. Note that this section’s presentation varies largely depending on the question being addressed and the methodological approach chosen.
The analysis will include your interpretation and should refer back to objectives and your literature review. What do the findings tell you about your initial question? What do they say about the theory? Some students prefer to break this out into two separate sections: Findings, then Discussion and Analysis. It is important to note that the more in-depth and analytical your discussion is, the better
the project is likely to be. We are not simply looking for a description of your findings, but a critical review and understanding.
Conclusions
Overall conclusions for the whole project: this is worth spending time on. It is not the place to introduce new literature. It is totally your work and may take time to develop. Do NOT leave the writing of this to the last moment. You need time to think/write it, leave it for a couple of days, then return to it. Re-read your work and make sure your conclusions can be drawn from the research you have carried out.
Recommendations for the workplace
As this is a management report linked to your work placement, it is important that you provide clear recommendations for practitioners. Even if your employer is not asking for recommendations, you need to demonstrate that you can produce recommendations that are realistic and detailed enough to be implemented easily.
Limitations of the research
Better that you point out limitations (and every work based project will have some!) than be open to criticism. Ideally, if there is improvements to propose for these limitations, propose them yourself.
Recommendations for further research
This is the place to show that you have a clear idea of where your research could go next. Some students may have been keen to carry out further research, but ran out of time. This is the place to show your ideas.
