Context

A researcher interested in treating spider phobia developed a computer program in which patients with spider phobia were given a vicarious treatment for the phobia. She wished to know whether the vicarious computer-aided treatment for spider phobia was as effective as a live exposure treatment program during which the patients were gradually exposed to live spiders.

Variables

Forty-five patients diagnosed with spider phobia were randomly allocated to one of three groups:

1. Relaxation (Control group) – no spider phobia relevant treatment given

2. Computer-aided - vicarious computer-aided treatment

3. Live exposure - live exposure treatment

The dependent variable was scores of a Spider Questionnaire (SpiderQ) that asked participants to rate their fear of spiders (higher scores = greater phobia). Participants completed the Spider Questionnaire before treatment (SpiderQ_Pre), immediately afterwards (SpiderQ_Post), and 6 months later (SpiderQ_Fup).

Data

The data are provided in the SPSS file Spider phobia treatment.sav. Keep in mind that the researcher is mainly interested in whether the computer-aided treatment is as effective as the live exposure treatment for spider phobia.
