-Volume: refers to the amount of data generated every second. Not long ago it was measured in Gigabytes and now we talk about Zettabytes or Yottabytes because of the growth of data.

-Velocity: refersto the speed at which new data are generated and the speed at which data move around. Data need to be processed in the shortest possible time, sometimes real time. Data need to be produced, processed, and analysed quickly to know the result in a very short time and thus carry out the best action for us and our business. For example, if a business is in the middle of a campaign, it may require analysing the comments of its followers in real time, to modify and improve its promotional performance.
