BILL’s PROBLEM
Class was coming to an end. Although the professor did not say so explicitly, the actions of the students made it clear. They started to sort their papers, and to look for their wallets. Perhaps to see if they could afford a cup of coffee during the break. Some of the students even started to whisper to each other about what to do during the break. The most obvious sign, however, was that most of the students checked the time.
At last, the professor also understood that it was time for a break. He said the magical words, “let’s take a 15-minute break. We start again at 15:15 at the latest.” At that time, Bill had, for a while, been considering what to do during the break. He had a list in mind. First, he had to visit the travel-agency, close to the cafeteria, to buy a train ticket for the weekend. If the line was short, it should not take more than five minutes. In the remaining ten minutes he should go outside! It was not because the weather was nice. On the contrary, it was chilly and damp outside. 
But Bill had a problem. For several lectures in a row, after the three o’clock break, he had fallen asleep. It was a difficult problem for him because he had overheard some comments from his classmates. They made fun of his sleeping habit. Today this would not happen! Today he would go outside and get some fresh air.
The class left the room and walked towards the cafeteria, as usual. The line grew, but soon everybody sat and drank their coffee or tea. The sound of voices, discussing all kinds of “important” subjects, were loud. Perhaps they were discussing the professor’s dialect? About 15 minutes later, the class was back in the classroom and the professor continued his lecture. It was not at all a boring lecture. On the contrary, the subject was interesting. (Well, despite that the lecturer’s hairdo was indeed horrible).
Bill sat at the same place as before the break. Actually the same place as he does in every lecture. He was somewhat frustrated. He had not bought the train ticket. He had not gone outside. A cup of coffee and a Danish were the things he consumed during the break...OK, the train ticket he could buy tomorrow. Probably it would be even better to do it tomorrow! The walk outside? Well, the coffee probably would do the same trick anyways… The professor continued and soon, very soon, Bill’s eyes started to close. He blinked, shook, and looked around. Nobody had seen anything. Good! But after a few minutes it was time again. Bill slowly transferred to the world of darkness. Suddenly someone shouted. “Is this lecture really this boring?” The professor was standing in front of his chair. Bill abruptly realized that he had fallen asleep again during the lecture after the three o’clock break. History repeated itself!
