Haemostasis: A question of balance

2. General discussion

Your assignment should cover the following aspects of haemostasis, which should be discussed under separate headings and subheadings.

• Overview of the pro-coagulant and anti-coagulant properties of the endothelium
• Primary haemostasis and the laboratory assessment of primary haemostasis
• Secondary haemostasis and the laboratory assessment of secondary haemostasis
• Fibrinolysis and the laboratory assessment of fibrinolysis
• General overview of haemorrhagic disorders and a table illustrating specific examples of the different types of haemorrhagic disorders. Please construct your own table and include the major inherited and acquired disorders of primary and secondary haemostasis noting whether the associated bleeding is mucocutaneous, anatomical or both.
