Research Prompt

You are a researcher from Western University with a background in interleaving and inductive learning. Your primary interest in these topics is trying to understand learner choice and motivation when the learner decides to study using either interleaving, blocking, or potentially a mix of the two studying styles. In particular, your focus as a researcher is on early learners—children in formal elementary school or early high school education contexts (e.g. grades 1 through 10). Previous research suggests that learners rarely choose to use interleaving in its purest form1 , but instead choose to use blocked studying.2 However, the choice for studying style does depend on the content being studied. If learners are focusing on different concepts or categories within one domain (e.g. different concepts within math), they tend to use blocked studying; if learners are studying content across two domains (e.g. concepts within math, and concepts within biology), learners tend to interleave everything (i.e. both across concepts, and across domains).3 It’s clear that the ‘choice’ of studying style is anything but clear!

Assignment Question

Based on the Research Prompt, and information provided about the data you are working with, address the following tasks in an R Markdown (.RMD) file:

• Select and create a graph in R that could be used to address the Research Question;

• Interpret your graph to generate a preliminary answer (i.e. conclusion) to the Research Question (no formal statistical analysis is relevant at this point). State your conclusion based on the graph in a short paragraph (maximum 150 words) and provide support for your conclusion by referencing relevant elements/information obtained from the graph you created
