Assignment Task

Detailed description

This assessment task requires you to make a 7-minute vodcast presentation (i.e., a video with audio, written text, and pictures/diagrams) about rheumatoid arthritis or alcohol addiction . The vodcast will be assessed according to the following criteria:

• Coverage (or depth) of the subject matter, which includes the quality of your case and how well your client’s case is integrated into your presentation,
• Accuracy of the information,
• Clarity of the presentation,
• Quality of the scenario created and the presentation
• Referencing

Your vodcast has to be about a specific person who has either rheumatoid arthritis or alcohol addiction. Your client and their case must be specific to your chosen profession: if, for example, you are a Bachelor of Midwifery student, your case must be about a pregnant woman (or someone who has recently given birth), and the relevance of the condition you are discussing must be evident in your presentation (see example below). Note that 12 marks (out of a maximum of 100) are associated with the quality of your case study and its relevance to your profession (see rubric), and therefore a case study that has no (or has only limited) relevance to your chosen profession will profoundly decrease the total number of marks your presentation may

You will then be required to answer a series of specific questions (listed at the end of this document) that relate directly to your person and the condition they have. All of your answers must be specific to this person, and mark deductions will be applied if your presentation does not relate to the person you have introduced. Rheumatoid arthritis-related vodcast questions

You will have the opportunity to describe the pathophysiology and pharmacological management for a person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. We would like you to show your understanding by making the links explicit between pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and pharmacological management of your person’s disease. When preparing your presentation, assume that your target audience is health professionals (e.g., nurses, paramedics, midwives; all of which should have roughly the same base knowledge as you do). Your answers to the questions below will be used to grade the ‘depth’, ‘accuracy’, and ‘clarity’ sections of your vodcast assignment (see marking rubric provided at the end of this document). At the beginning of your vodcast, you need to set the scene within the first minute — i.e., tell us about your person, state the degree you are enrolled in (e.g., Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Paramedicine, or Bachelor of Nursing), and then proceed to answer the following questions.

Question

1. Discuss the aetiology and pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis in your client/patient and compare it to the aetiology and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. Ensure that the aetiology and pathogenesis align with the patient history you have provided.

2. Link the pathogenesis you have discussed in Question 1 with the clinical manifestations your patient is presenting with.

3. Discuss (i) ONE pharmacological treatment options for your client/patient and (ii) explain ONE possible non-pharmacological way your patient/client can manage their condition.

Alcohol addiction-related vodcast questions

Question

1. Discuss the changes affecting GABA-ergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission and NMDA receptors that develop as a result of your patient’s alcohol consumption.

Based on your neurotransmitter changes discussed in Question 1A, discuss at least ONE possible aetiology of your patient’s alcohol addiction. In your answer, you must also discuss the concepts of psychological dependence, physical dependence and alcohol tolerance.

2. If left untreated, your client’s alcohol addiction may lead to a number of complications. Choose ONE out of the following three and discuss how alcohol addiction leads to the development of the complication you chose and explain ONE of its plausible consequences for your client:

• Alcohol induced dementia
• Cirrhosis of the liver
• If your client is pregnant, foetal alcohol syndrome disorder

3. You are helping your client manage their alcohol addiction. Discuss the most appropriate pharmacological treatment for your client. In your answer, ensure you relate the rationale for your chosen treatment to the changes in neurotransmitters and receptors you discussed in Question 1.
