  • This assessment task requires you to make a 7-minute Vodcast presentation (a PowerPoint presentation with audio, written text, and pictures/diagrams) about diabetes mellitus (Type I, Type II or gestational diabetes) or asthma. The Vodcast will be assessed according to the following criteria:
  1. Depth subject matter,
  2. Accuracy of the information,
  3. Clarity of presentation,
  4. Ability to engage the audience,
  5. Overall quality,
  6. Adherence to time,
  7. Referencing
  • Your Vodcast has to be about a specific ‘person/client’ who has diabetes mellitus (Type I, Type II or gestational diabetes) or asthma.
  • You will need to create your own ‘person/client’ according to the following criteria*.

VODCAST ASSESSMENT

You will have the opportunity to describe the pathophysiology and pharmacological management for a person/client with type 1 diabetes mellitus, type 2 diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes or extrinsic asthma. At the beginning of your Vodcast, you need to set the scene within the first minute by introducing your person/client. Following this introduction, proceed to answer the following questions.

DIABETES MELLITUS

Question 1a Explain how BOTH of the following are different in your patient in comparison to a healthy, non-diabetic person.

  2. insulin binding to its target cells

Question 1b Describe the aetiology and pathogenesis of the type of diabetes your client has and compare them to either of the other two types of diabetes.

Question 1a Two of the major pathological changes asthmatics face are inflammation of and increased mucus production in the airways. By reflecting on the pathophysiology of bronchial asthma, explain how these pathological changes arise in your patient. In your explanation, you are expected to include a brief discussion of the immune cell-mediated response.

Question 1b The clinical manifestations of an acute asthma attack may include the following signs and symptoms:

Choose one clinical manifestation from GROUP A and one from GROUP B, and then relate them to the underlying pathophysiology of your person. In your answer, explain the link between an acute asthma attack and both signs/symptoms you chose.

Question 2a Relievers and preventers are used in the management of asthma. Provide an example of each, explain the mechanism of action of these two drug classes, and describe their benefits in managing your patient’s condition.

Question 2b Adequate education of patients suffering from/prone to asthma attacks is important in asthma management. Briefly summarize the advice you would give to your patient in respect to

  1. Corticosteroid administration and
  2. Strategies to effectively prevent and manage their acute asthmatic episodes.

Question 3 Explain the pathomechanism of the following long-term consequences of extrinsic asthma and their impact on your client’s quality of life:
