Purpose:
This assessment tests your critical thinking skills and encourages reflective practice for deep learning. It also encourages you to reflect on the teaching material delivered in the workshops. The assignment will allow teaching staff to gauge your written communication skills and your ability to search, access and critically evaluate scientific information.
All health professionals need to be able to communicate and explain their work to a non-specialist audience, which may comprise those involved in policy-making decisions as well as the general public. As you will be aware, the health sciences are often poorly represented by the media. There are plentiful examples of reporting that may be sensationalistic, misleading, biased (e.g. on vaccine safety), inaccurate (e.g. many media sources seem to view the words bacteria and viruses as interchangeable), or all four. Hence, there is a need for, and a potential career in, good writing and communication in the health professional arena.
This assessment involves addressing a series of specific questions in the form of an essay. The questions relate directly to a case study. All of your answers must be specific for the person in the case study; marks will not be given where your essay does not relate to the person in the case study. You need to choose ONE of the two case studies to complete and submit.
The answers to the questions in the case study must be integrated into an essay. You do not need to write an introduction and conclusion. You can present the information in the order you feel flows best; you don’t have to present it in the order of the questions. The answers to the questions cannot be presented as question answer style (like in the manual). The questions must be incorporated into sentences and paragraphs that include facts from the case study. If presented in question/answers style, you will be marked down. You must use images to help with your explanations (ensure the images you choose are relevant to your explanations). Ensure you label and number your figures, and take care to refer to the appropriate numbered figure in relevant sections of your essay. No figure should be included that is not referred to in your text. You will be marked down if you go over the word limit. Pleases see the rubric for information about mark penalties.
You must include appropriate in-text citations and a reference list in APA style. Please take care to also cite the source of all images used.
The information you present must be synthesised using only reliable sources (e.g. from peer- reviewed articles in the scientific and clinical research literature, from Government websites, from textbooks). A maximum of TWO websites may be used (please carefully assess websites for quality and accuracy). This limit of two websites does NOT include peer reviewed journals that are accessible online.
Care must be taken in all aspects of the essay, including spelling and grammar. You are NOT to use any quotes in your essay. Quotes are very rarely used in scientific writing; you need to integrate information and explain in your own words. If you insert any quotes, the person marking your work will not read that content and the information will not be considered for marking. Take special care to avoid plagiarism. Use of the text matching software “Turnitin” has been approved to assist in the avoidance and detection of plagiarism.
Sasha case study
Sasha, a healthy baby of 6 weeks old, is visiting his GP for a quick health check-up.
1. A) Describe ONE primitive reflex, involving the hands ONLY, that will disappear by the time Sasha turns 2 years of age. Include the name of this reflex, the stimulus, and the response. Provide justification of why this reflex is not present after 2 years of age. (4 marks)
B) 1.5 year old Sasha steps on a sharp rock with a bare foot; describe the reflex induced by this action, including the name of this reflex, the stimulus, and the response. Specify if this reflex will persist after 2 years of age and explain why. (6 marks)
Sasha is now a 21-year-old athlete. He placed 96th in the 2019 ironman triathlon in Port Macquarie. During this event he swam 3.8 km, rode a bicycle for 180 km and ran for 42.2 km, in that order, in a time of 10 hrs, 12 minutes.
If Sasha was dehydrated by as little as 2 percent of his body weight, he could become fatigued, have reduced athletic performance, be at risk of heat stress, and be more likely to get muscle cramps. Therefore, it is important for Sasha to stay well hydrated during the triathlon to have the capacity to tolerate the longer and more intense activity. During the triathlon he chooses to drink a sports drink containing 0.4% sodium and 0.5% potassium (=0.9% electrolytes).
2. Discuss the effects and benefits on fluid balance of body cells when consuming a drink that contains 0.9% of electrolytes versus water during an ironman triathlon. (6 mark) Note: you do not need to discuss the broader benefits of electrolytes drinks.
3. After his run, Sasha is grabbing his bottle containing the sports drink. Describe briefly all the structures, tracts and cells involved in this voluntary motor control action, from the central nervous system to the action of grabbing the bottle with his hand. (8 marks)
4. During his last run during his triathlon, Sasha is suffering from muscle fatigue Although the precise mechanisms that cause muscle fatigue are still not clear, several factors are thought to contribute. A. One of these factors includes an inadequate release of intracellular calcium ions in muscle cells. Describe the effects of this inadequate release of intracellular calcium, including a description of the physiological sources and effects of intracellular Ca++ in the skeletal muscle cell during contraction (6 marks) B. Another factor suggested for explaining muscle fatigue is the depletion of oxygen in muscle cells. Describe how the skeletal muscle cell will use glycogen in absence of oxygen in this cell. (2marks)
5. Discuss the role of the neural and musculoskeletal system on Sasha’s thermoregulation during the triathlon. Include how the homeostatic control of body temperature differs when Sasha enters the cold ocean water for the swim component of the event, in comparison to the running leg. (8 marks)
