Discussion

This section consists of a clear evaluation and interpretation of the results with respect to the original objectives of the study and in the context of what has been learned by other investigators. Therefore, you must compare your findings to those reported in the scientific literature (properly cited both within the text of your Discussion and in the References section at the end). If your results were different than what may have been expected, you should suggest reasons for this.

The Discussion section does not consist of a repetition of the Results section, and it does not contain further analysis of the data stated in the Results – all analyses should be outlined in the results and discussed in the Discussion section.

End this section with a concluding paragraph to summarize your report and the key take-away points that the reader should remember. It is appropriate to comment on the methodology used and how it could be improved. Also, you should suggest other types of experiments that could be performed to expand knowledge on the work done in this investigation.

Here are some starting points when beginning to write your discu ssion. Explain the trends and results - if they are not what you would have assumed would happen , why were they different? What contributed to this? Some things to address:

  • How is dry weight/biomass representative of growth and fitness of plants?
  • How does competition affect the mean weight of plants in a pot?
  • Why did growth change at the different densities? How would you explain this with what you learned in your literature review?
  • Why look at root vs. shoot biomass - what does this tell us about our results?
  • What factors do roots and shoots compete for?
  • Does this competition study differ from those with other species, why or why not?
  • Did you meet the objectives of the experiment? (i.e., were your data sufficient to address your hypotheses/prediction statements?) If not, how could you improve the methodology next time? What other experiments could you run which might yield better results?
  • Are there any bigger picture conclusions that can be drawn from your study? Might there be some value in us understanding the effects of intraspecific competition in plants?
