Task:
The Abstract, Partial Results and Discussion of the practical report will be due on Week 14 Monday the 11th June 2017 at 11.30 pm. It is to be submitted electronically on FLO in the assignment submission box. Please remember that once your assignment has been submitted to this box it will also be processed in TURNITIN to check for academic integrity compliance. It is worth 15% of your overall grade. Please use the marking rubric provided for guidance when writing your report.
Title
The title should be informative of the investigation carried out. It should not simply be “DNA to Genome Practical Report” or anything similar. A good example of a title is “A Phylogenic approach using the glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH) gene identified...........................................”.
Abstract – Max 250 words
The abstract should be written last after the rest of the report is finished. It is basically a condensed version of the report that gives the reader a brief overview of the report which they can decide to read in its entirety. You have not been asked to write a full report however the abstract should cover all aspects of the practical. It should include; a brief overview of what is being investigated and why it is being investigated, the aims of the experiment, ALL the methods used in the entire experiment, the results and the conclusions that can be drawn from the results. Try to achieve a balance between each section remembering you only have 250 words.
Results – Word Limit: 300 -750
The results should present the relevant data collected from the experiment. This data should be presented in a table or figure whenever suitable and all figure and tables should have captions that include descriptive titles. Observations should be made from the data and described in separate text to the figure legend. Observations include things such as major trends in the data. It is important that the observations are only described and not interpreted.
Interpretation is saved for the discussion part of the report.

• Included in your results should be your phylogenetic tree, a table of the grasses which had their GAPDH gene extracted and a table of the
sequences collected from the GenBank of the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).
Tables and Figures
Tables and figures are used to present data in a way that is easy for the reader to interpret. Each table or figure must be introduced within the text, and the comment should highlight the main points. Tables and figures are numbered independently of each other (i.e. Table 1 and 2, and then Figure 1 and 2 as well). Numbers are assigned according to the order of first mention in the text.
Each table and figure must have a self-explanatory title so that the reader can understand its content without referring to the text. Tables are referred to as tables, and all other items (graphs, photographs, drawings, diagrams, maps, etc.) are referred to as figures. Please use the feedback that you were given when you submitted the two gels as results when completing this part of your assignment.
What information should be included in your result section:
• Comment on Sequencing Result- did your DNA get send off, did it work? If yes what was the quality of your seq. If not whose sequences did you choose.
• Table of Intron-exon structure of the grass genes chosen
• Figure of 17 cDNA seqs and the cDNA sequences extracted from at least 5 plant gene sequences
• All tables and figures must have titles and appropriate legends.
• There should be no discussion of your results at this stage
Discussion – Word Limit: 600-1000
The Discussion is where the observations made in the results are interpreted and their relevance to the aims discussed. It should state whether the aims of the experiment were achieved and if so what it means in regards to current knowledge on the topics. If the aims were not achieved the reason, whether known or suspected, should be discussed and changes to be made to the experiment to achieve the aims should be suggested. Whenever possible all interpretations and critical analysis should be supported by references to the lab manual, the text, data presented or other studies from the literature.
Your results and observations should be compared to those of other relevant papers and reasons given for any differences.
Suggestions should be given for improvements to the experiment as well as possible further research leading on from it. Points that should be included in discussion (any related data should be reported in the results)
• Quality of your DNA sequence data
• Which seqs/grasses form clades and what does that mean?
• What does your tree tell you about the evolution of the grasses you chose?
• Do all Australian native grasses sit in the same clade?
• Are the grasses you chose GAPC, GAPC2, GAPCP or GAPCP2 genes? What is the evidence for this?
• Does the tree predict bioremediation potential; ie is the hypothesis behind this experiment supported. If yes it is why and no why not? Use your data presented in results to support you conclusions.
• What would you do different in future experiment to improve your results.
