Task: You have been provided with two folders containing real datasets. One folder, labelled butterflies, contains butterfly counts taken at 66 sites in Boulder County Colorado, the other, labelled primates, contains ecological trait data on the world's primates compiled from a review of 1,216 studies. Alongside each of these datasets, I have provided a text file explaining the names of all the column headings. 
Your task is to select one of these datasets and write a short report exploring two hypotheses based around the data. You will come up with the hypotheses yourselves after viewing the columns and thinking of reasonable questions that you could evaluate using R.
To get you started a hypothesis for the butterflies could be ‘do more buildings at a site decrease the abundance of butterflies?’ And for the primates, ‘do species with larger body sizes have larger home ranges?’ You can use either of those questions to get you started and come up with one more hypothesis – or you can use two of your own. You could also alter one of these by asking a question on a subset of the data, ‘do lemurs with larger body sizes have larger home ranges?’ Ultimately, the hypotheses themselves aren’t all-important, what’s key is that you start from hypothesis and then show that you can load in the data, organise it, and then conduct the analysis. That being said, it easier and more fun to come up with something plausible, as I mentioned above this is real data so it’s a good opportunity to think how you might actually analyse a real ecological question. 
The assessment will consist of two parts. The first part is the code you used. This will be a saved copy of the R script used to conduct the analysis. It will be marked on its accuracy and how clearly the script is commented and spaced. The second part is the report itself. There are set instructions to follow but other than that there is a good amount of flexibility. It will be marked on the clarity of the writing, the quality of the figures, the appropriateness of the statistical test selected and the accuracy with which it is reported.
