2. You are designing an experiment to test how long populations of copepods (small aquatic animals) can persist at different pH values. You are considering two experimental designs, with the data to be analyzed by ANOVA. In one design, you will have three pH levels (pH=5, 7, or 9), with 20 replicate copepod populations exposed to each pH level. In an alternative design, you will have five pH levels (pH=5, 6, 7, 8, or 9), with 12 replicate populations exposed to each pH level. That is, each design requires a total of 60 populations, but the designs differ in the number of pH levels and the number of replicate copepod populations per pH level.
a. Based on your knowledge of copepod biology, you suspect that copepod populations will persist for less long on average at pH 5 than at pH values of 6 or higher, but persist equally long on average at all pH values of 6 or higher. Which of the two experimental designs would give you the most power to detect a difference in persistence time
between pH 5 and the other pH levels included in the experiment? Or would the power be equal for both? Explain your answer.
b. Does choosing one design over the other affect your probability of making a type I error in a Tukey's HSD test? Why or why not?
