Learning Outcomes

Personal and Transferable Skills

PTS1- Assess own learning and development needs using reflection and feedback, to reach a desired aim in the production of a laboratory report and demonstrate an understanding of the applicability of biomedical science to potential careers and promote future professional development.
PTS2- Recognise and evaluate factors which enhance group processes and team-working and modifying responses, where appropriate
PTS3- Communicate effectively, using a range of methods, to a specialist and non-specialist audience.
PTS4- Use a range of digital and computational tools to retrieve, prepare and present information.

Research, Knowledge and Cognitive Skills

RKC1- Understand and apply understanding of major concepts underpinning pathology and the scientific basis of human health and disease.
RKC2- Use major aspects of terminology, nomenclature, classification systems and concepts associated with pathology.
RKC3- Read, critically appraise and cite appropriate biological source material, including published research or reports in pathology.
RKC4- Identify the steps and employ a variety of study methods to investigate a clinical case study.

Professional Skills

PS1- Demonstrate emerging competence in carrying out supervised laboratory experiments using a range of analytical instrumentation and techniques
appropriate to biological experimentation appropriate to pathology.
PS2- Carry out sample selection and data recording, including clinical data, in a systematic manner in a laboratory environment.
PS3- Competently utilise digital software to process, statistically test, and visualise datasets derived from the field, laboratory, clinical environment to make valid interpretations in terms of underlying theory.
PS4- Recognise some of the moral, ethical and legal issues associated with laboratory investigations of clinical samples and use ethical standards and professional codes of conduct with limited direction and supervision
PS5- Under direction, independently appraise the requirements for safe handling of hazardous substances including any specific hazards associated with their use and understand risk assessments.

Students will be assigned to one of four groups in laboratory session 2 (H&E staining). Working in groups, students will stain a set of histopathological samples, firstly using haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) histochemistry (laboratory session 2), then with a primary antibody relevant to the particular disease using immunohistochemistry (sessions 3 and 4). Images highlighting the pathology underlying the disease will then be captured at in the image capture lab (session 5) and included in the final Laboratory Portfolio.
In addition to the images acquired during the laboratory sessions, students will be given a pathology report, which will provide clinical and disease history relevant to the samples used in the laboratory sessions.
Using the clinical and pathological information provided in the pathology report, in addition to images of pathological sections stained in laboratory sessions, students must make a pathological diagnosis for the disease in question. Once the disease has been established, a portfolio should be written describing the clinical and pathological basis of the disease. The Laboratory Portfolio will be written, submitted and assessed individually.

The Laboratory Portfolio will comprise four main chapters:

Introduction — An introduction to the disease identified, including demographics and epidemiology, should be outlined. The aims and objectives of the portfolio should be included at the end of the introduction.

Method — describing the protocol for the methods used to generate the figures shown in the patholf aription for any operative procedures commonly used to obtain the samples. along with the preparatory stens used in
