Instructions:
it may be helpful to take some inspiration from some published research articles. You are not restricted to the NHANES data in this project.

In this project, you must use at least two datasets that need to be merged together and do some sort of analysis on (graphs, tables).
You should have at least two sections:

  1. A short introduction summarizing the papers’ findings and what aspects of them you are going to assess.
  2. A results section where you produce and interpret the results.

If you feel that another section is needed, you’re welcome to include it. Just make sure your paper reads smoothly.

 

Requirements:

  1. You should have at least one figure and at least one table.
  2. I want to see the HTML file and the Rmd file. The HTML should look like a polished paper, which normally won’t be HTML, but since HTML reads better on SOLE, that will be helpful to me.
  3. By “polished” I mean that there should only be title information (including authors), the paper text, and your plots/figures. It should not have R code or any errors, warnings, or messages from R.
  4. You may replicate the same figures/tables that the article(s) used (though via ggplot, dplyr, etc), though don’t necessarily expect them to be identical!
  5. That said, you are not limited to the same results that were used. Researchers are sometimes not the best or most creative in exploring data. There may be aspects of the data that the article(s) ignored, or sometimes they present only a table, and not a figure.
  6. Cite the article(s) you references. You do not need to use Bibtex specifically, but you do need to use some reference manager. RMarkdown supports a number of these.

 

Resources:
We’ve seen the NHANES data in class a fair bit. There is also the BRFSS study from the CDC, which targets many behavioral and health outcomes. Some potential sources are US Census, FBI, and CDC. For the second (final) project, you’ll need to have at least two datasets that you should merge together and do some analysis on (graphs, tables). Again, it might be helpful to draw inspiration from an existing article.

For example, Googling “CDC data opioid overdose state year”, the first link has another link to this page where some data may be downloaded. The CDC Wonder is also a reasonably-easy tool to work with to obtain the dataset.

In terms of identifying a finding, there are a number of options.
- PLoS One or PLoS Medicine (and probably other journals in the PLoS family) are open- access. In PLoS Medicine, I came across this paper and references that the data are available.
- Various science news sites or blogs may talk about recent publications. E.g. outlets like:

  1. RealClearScience
  2. RealClearHealth
  3. ACSH has sections on Biomedical or Pharmaceutical sectors.
