Biostatistics Project Proposal Project Title: A short succinct, but descriptive title for your project.

  • Project Group No. State your project group number here.
  • Members: • E.g. John Smith
  • Introduction Introduce your topic. Define important terms and build a rationale or justification for why the investigation is needed on the Data bank.
  • Justification can be specific, e.g. Very little is known.. or general, e.g. More research is needed... This should be backed up by a strong argument based on references to previous research.
  • Research Question State a clear research question/aim of the project. Don't confuse your research question with a hypothesis!
  • Hypothesis State a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a statement of the predicted outcome of a study based on previous findings, theory or a logical argument. Don't confuse a research hypothesis with a statistical hypothesis!
  • Population Define your population. For example, all adult in Melbourne...Your population is the wider group to which you want to generalise your findings to.
  • Sample Explain how you plan to collect a sample from the data bank to use in your investigation. I need to be convinced that you understand how the sampling will be conducted. How many observations do you plan to get? You can base this answer on statistical or practical grounds. Not all projects will take the same amount of time, so you need to think long and hard about how many observations you think you or your group can manage. Don't over commit, but, also, don't select only a few observations.
  • Design Clear and succinctly explain how you will conduct your investigation. Explain whether it is an experiment or observational study. Explain how you will collect and/or manipulate variables. Don’t include more than two time points for repeated measures and don’t look at too many outcome variables. Keep in mind you need to present this on one poster at the end of the semester! Your proposal should have enough detail for me to be able to replicate the same study. If I have to ask questions about what you’re planning, then you haven't provided the right detail.
  • Measures List all the variables that will be considered in your investigation, their measurement/levels and scale. For example:
  • • Treatment: Drug vs. Placebo - Qualitative, nominal
  • • Concentration: Light flash test - Quantitative, Continuous(milliseconds)
  • Statistical Analysis I don't expect your group to know exactly what statistical analysis will be applied. However, you will need to provide a short, preliminary description detailing how you will plan to summarise your data and analyse it. It might help to read ahead a little in the course for some ideas. I will want to check that you're on the right path.
