Highlights
TASK:
The dataset, BES_2017.dta, is the face-to-face post-election survey from the 2017 British Election Study. It was carried out between June and October 2017, and included 2,194 respondents as a representative sample of the British electorate. The data codebook, BES_2017_codebook.pdf, provides all the requisite information you will need about the dataset.
Your assignment is to model the British electorate’s attitudes toward the environment. The variable measuring this, h01, is a 10-point scale on which respondents are asked their opinion on the environment (see the codebook for more information). You should construct a set of models to test a set of hypotheses about people’s position on this scale.
More specifically, the analysis should be written up as a 3,000 word report, consisting of the following sections:
1. Briefly introduce the topic and identify the interest in carrying out such an analysis
2. Present three hypotheses that will be tested. Formulate these three hypotheses based upon your general knowledge and understanding of people’s attitudes toward the environment (informed by some introductory reading on the topic, if necessary). Please select one variable from each category below. Each hypothesis should specify the relationship between people’s environmental attitudes and the specific variable you chose from each category.
a. Dummy Variables
i. Gender (y09)
ii. Twitter User (k06)
iii. Vote in the 2017 general election (b1)
b. Categorical/Ordinal Variables I
i. Personal Economic Situation (l01)
ii. Income (y01)
iii. Education (edlevel)
c. Continuous/Interval Variables
i. Left-Right Ideology (e01)
ii. Political Interest (k01)
iii. Political Trust (n03)
Though not required, you may propose and test one more complex hypothesis (in addition to the three hypotheses) for a higher mark, including conditional hypotheses—e.g. the relationship between X and Y varies depending on Z—or hypotheses about a non-linear relationship—e.g. quadratic. If you choose to add a conditional hypothesis, you must select two additional variables from the options provided above that you will use. If you choose a non-linear hypothesis, you must select one additional variable from the list above that you will use.
3. Describe the variables you include in the analyses. Explain why the measurement of those variables is appropriate. Also, explain all data
transformations that were performed to enable you to carry out the relevant statistical tests. If some variables are included as control variables, explain why you chose those variables and why it is important to include them in your analyses.
4. Present and explain the findings from your statistical tests. It is up to you to decide which types of analysis are useful to run. However, you should consider including the following types of analyses (where appropriate):
a. Basic descriptives of the data and variables used in the analyses
b. Bivariate exploratory tests of your hypotheses
c. Multiple regression model testing of your hypotheses
5. Include an appendix that contains a text log file of the do file you use to run your data manipulation and analyses. Make sure the appendix is readable (i.e., you may need to select a different font type and size to ensure that the output is aligned as it appears in STATA). Also, highlight all the command lines in your log.
