OBJECTIVES

This assessment item relates to course learning outcome 2 with associated implications for learning outcome 1. These assessment items will provide an opportunity to demonstrate the transferable skills in learning outcomes 5, 6 and 7.

In-text referencing (acknowledgement of your sources of information) is a compulsory university requirement for all assignments.

This assessment item must be submitted via the Moodle site before the due date.

Your Submission must be a PROFESSIONAL REPORT. As this is the second assignment, you are expected to have read and adopted any feedback provided for assignment one. Do not repeat errors.

The assignment must be submitted through Turnitin as a single WORD document to enable track changes feedback to be provided.

QUESTION 1

Industrial Philanthropy (Must be illustrated with maps, etc.)

At a time of overcrowding, health issues and homelessness, during the industrial revolution in the reign of Queen Victoria, some enlightened industrialists provided quality housing and social services for their employees.

1. What living and working conditions were the industrialists trying to replace?
2. Provide a short biography of two industrialists describing the housing, services and estate designs.
3. Research the need for a present-day business to provide housing for their employees (anywhere in the world). Identify the issues they are trying to solve.
4. What are your views on working from home? Support your answer with research that has been undertaken into the positive and negative effects on individuals and organisations.
5. What are the environmental and sustainability effects of working from home?

QUESTION 2

Planning (Must be illustrated with maps etc.)

1. Consider the introductory readings for both Topic 4 and Topic 5 and your research to summarise the examples that illustrate opposing purposes behind various early planning strategies (village to city etc.).
2. Provide two examples, including known or predictable disadvantages that may have resulted from each initial idea that led to the opposing policies reflected in later developments.
3. Critically analyses how city planning has evolved from Fortress to Garden City and Cul-de-sac to New Urbanism. What significant factors, in your opinion , determines sprawl vs densification?
4. What environmental issues could be reduced by changing current planning ideas?

QUESTIONS 3

Urban Design – Energy and Water

It is recommended that you read, but not limited to , all relevant sections of the study guide, textbooks, and online sources about sustainable urban design issues, focusing on energy generation and usage.

Introduction

We are attempting to move to a zero-carbon economy and need energy to power our society. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of establishing new energy systems and distribution forms. Research methods of reducing energy demands.

1. With an increasing awareness of environmental issues, how are planners attempting to alleviate the long commuting times related to urban sprawl (and thus the pollution and associated vehicle use issues?
2. Separately discuss which is energy production and distribution.
3. How does your municipalityrate this environmental issue?
4. In your opinion , what is the most probable way to reduce demand and thus energy use?
5. How are water strategies incorporating shifting weather patterns predicted by Climate Change modelling and the increased frequency of flooding/drought?

Discuss the above issues (in your own words) with acknowledged reference to the readings, textbook and any other resources you may find. Illustrate everything!

QUESTION 4

Transportation

As participants in various aspects of the construction industry, you must consider all transport factors. These include site access, materials deliveries, end-user access, public transport etc.

This will be influenced and either facilitated or inhibited by the planning and design of the building interface to footpaths, streets and roads. Also, the type of building will influence transportation options (an airport would be different from a school or hospital).

Increasingly, people are choosing to walk, take public transport, and ride bicycles and electric scooters rather than personal cars.

Research these issues and trends:

1. A . Discuss whether the established European solutions to increased use of bikes and reduced car reliance might suit Australia and your location regarding the climate etc.
2. B . Consider approaches to increase pedestrianisation and discuss what you think is lacking or working and how things could be improved in your local area (Don’t forget to state where you live).
3. C . Give illustrated examples to support your thoughts in question B above.
4. D . Research the sustainability of electric vehicles and their charging infrastructure. Do you see the present electric technology as a permanent solution?
