You are working as a Quantity Surveyor at ‘Sydney Quantity Surveying Pty Ltd’. You are assigned to a new project for a proposed residential development. The Senior Quantity Surveyor asked you to prepare Bills of Quantities (BoQ) using CostX software, in accordance with Australian and New Zealand Standard Method of Measurement (2022 edition) (ANZSMM).
For this Assessment, you must choose one option from the options below:
Option 1: Bills of Quantities for the following trades should be completed and submitted
Groundworks
Masonry
Option 2: Bills of Quantities for the following trades should be completed and submitted
Groundworks
Exterior elements
Initially, you are required to prepare one-page project summary. It should include the following sections:
a. An introduction – brief description of the project
b. Basic building areas
i. Land area
ii. Gross Floor Area (GFA)
iii. Fully Enclosed Covered Area (FECA)
iv. Unenclosed Covered Area (UCA)
Select either option 1 or 2 and prepare BoQ for required sections using CostX software. You MUST use CostX software for this task.
(For example, if you choose Option 1, you will submit BoQ for Groundworks and Masonry sections.)
Task 2 should include the following:
List of assumptions – Students are encouraged to make sensible assumptions where drawings and specifications are not clear and where there are discrepancies between drawings and specifications. (One Page Only)
CostX file in ‘.exf’ format imported and uploaded. All the calculations should be clearly provided including the following:
a. Relevant drawings are uploaded, named and filed in a consistent format, showing the digital measurement
b. Dimension groups are created and named where necessary
Option 1:
Groundworks
Masonry
Option 2:
Groundworks
Exterior Elements
All the relevant drawings, reports and details are provided in the separate folder in Moodle. A list of drawings and reports uploaded in the folder is given in Appendix 1 of this document.
Contribution Sheet:
The submission should include a section to mention contributions by each group member.
Submission:
The submission is due 4 August 2025, 11.59 pm. All the files must be submitted via Moodle. The submission includes three files:
File 1: PDF file including Project Summary (Task1)
File 2: CostX file in “.exf” format. CostX files can be submitted in multiple files due to the limitation and restriction of CostX educational version.
File 3: PDF file including Concrete and Masonry/Exterior Elements BoQ, List of Assumptions and Contribution sheet
All the files are to be named “student number_full name_Task1/2”.
Late submissions: Marks will be deducted for late submission without approval for an extension as per the UNSW rules, policies, and guidelines (refer to Course Outline). Extensions will only be considered under approved Special Considerations.
Group work:
It is important to work together as a group to complete this assessment. Students must form groups of 2-3 members. Self-enrol to a group using ‘Major Assessment group’ link provided in the Moodle – Assessment Hub.
This assessment required students to demonstrate their skills in quantity surveying for a residential development project under the supervision of ‘Sydney Quantity Surveying Pty Ltd’. The core objective was to prepare Bills of Quantities (BoQ) using CostX software in compliance with the Australian and New Zealand Standard Method of Measurement (ANZSMM, 2022 edition).
Students were provided with two options for trade coverage:
Option 1: Groundworks and Masonry
Option 2: Groundworks and Exterior Elements
The assessment consisted of two main tasks:
Prepare a one-page project summary including:
Introduction and brief project description
Basic building area calculations: Land area, GFA, FECA, and UCA
Prepare BoQ for the chosen trades using CostX software.
Include a list of assumptions to resolve unclear or conflicting specifications.
Upload CostX file in the format.
Provide digital measurements, dimension groups, and final BoQ in PDF format.
Include a contribution sheet detailing each group member’s role.
Submission requirements:
PDF file of Project Summary (Task 1)
CostX file(s) in format
PDF file of BoQs, assumptions, and contribution sheet
All files to follow the naming format
Late submissions penalized unless approved under special considerations
Assessment criteria focused on clarity, accuracy, correct use of CostX, systematic formatting, appropriate units, and adherence to ANZSMM standards.
The academic mentor guided the students step by step to ensure full understanding and accurate completion of the assessment:
Mentor explained the project context: preparing BoQs for a residential development project.
Clarified the difference between Option 1 (Groundworks + Masonry) and Option 2 (Groundworks + Exterior Elements).
Emphasized the need to follow ANZSMM (2022 edition) standards for all measurements and units.
Students were instructed to summarize the project clearly and concisely on one page.
Mentor highlighted the importance of including:
Introduction and project objectives
Calculations for land area, GFA, FECA, and UCA
Mentor reviewed drafts, ensuring accuracy of measurements and clarity of report presentation.
Option selection: Mentor guided students in choosing the appropriate option based on group strengths.
Assumptions: Students were instructed to make sensible assumptions for unclear drawings or discrepancies. Mentor emphasized documenting these clearly.
CostX software use:
Importing relevant drawings, naming them correctly
Creating dimension groups for repeatable measurements
On-screen measurement and verification
BoQ extraction: Mentor explained how to generate PDF outputs for submission.
Verification: Mentor conducted checks on calculations, units, and measurement consistency.
Mentor guided the team to prepare a contribution sheet detailing each member’s role.
Emphasized correct file naming and submission through Moodle.
A clear, concise Project Summary was submitted, covering the project description and all basic building area calculations.
Accurate Bills of Quantities were prepared using CostX, including:
Correct digital measurements
Properly named dimension groups
Calculations following ANZSMM standards
A list of assumptions was provided for ambiguous elements.
PDF outputs of BoQs were correctly formatted and submitted alongside the CostX .exf file.
Group contribution was clearly documented.
Competent use of CostX software for digital measurement and BoQ preparation.
Application of ANZSMM (2022 edition) standards for measurement and units.
Identifying and resolving discrepancies between drawings and specifications.
Documenting assumptions logically.
Effective teamwork in groups of 2-3 members.
Clear documentation of individual contributions.
Preparation of well-organized project summaries and PDF outputs.
Ensuring clarity, consistency, and professional presentation of all deliverables.
Through guided mentorship, students successfully completed both tasks, producing accurate, professional, and compliant BoQs and project summaries. The step-by-step approach reinforced both technical proficiency with CostX and adherence to industry standards, while also developing collaborative and analytical skills critical for professional quantity surveying practice.
