Tongo is a State which obtained its independence from neighbouring Blonesia in 2011, after a protracted armed conflict. Tongo has a sea border whereas Blonesia is a landlocked state. They are both members of the United Nations.  Different ethnics groups co-exist in Tongo: 70% of Tongo’s population are Lanaites, 12?ing of Blonesian ethnicity. The remaining 18% of the population is made of a number of smaller ethnic groups.In 2013, after Tongo obtained its independence from Blonesia, the two countries entered into a Treaty of Friendly Relations and Cooperation. It contained a provision allowing Blonesian commercial traffic (trucks and trains) to travel across Tongo so that they could access Tongo’s main shipping port to load their commercial goods onto to ships for the world markets. The preamble of the Treaty states that its purpose is ‘to deepen friendly, mutually-beneficial relations between the two states.’ For several years relations were good, and the memories of the conflict began to recede. However, tensions between Tongo and Blonesia dramatically increased in early 2018. This was largely due to allegations by Blonesia that ethnic Blonesians in Tongo have been prevented from using their unique language and practicing their cultural beliefs. These allegations are backed by media reports and independent investigations conducted by Human Rights Watch which report, for example, the banning of Blonesian-language school textbooks and the shutting down of the local Blonesian-ethnic radio station.In June 2021, the ‘Garundy Liberation Party’ was formed in Garundy - the southern, densely-forested province of Tongo (where the majority of ethnic Blonesians in Tongo live). The ‘GLP’ declared its goal: “self-determination for the people of Garundy”, and its means of achieving it: “any means necessary.” It commenced a violent insurgency – including blowing up Tongo military and civilian government buildings, killing hundreds.  Tongo forces intervened and brutally suppressed the insurgency that was headquartered somewhere in the forests of Garundy. Tongo’s military tactics were brutal, including the total destruction of villages and towns suspected of harbouring so-called “Garundy terrorists,” and the complete defoliation of the forests of Garundy using chemical weapons.  On 21st September 2021, the GLP declared Garundy’s independence from Tongo and appealed for international assistance
