Literature Review 

This section is a short literature review of the research area under discussion. You should read several (no less than 5) articles published on the article topic and write a brief literature review. The goal of this brief review is to summarize the state of the research up to the point of your article. This allows you to place the article you will critique in context. Almost all of the articles that you read for the literature review will have preceded the one you are critiquing. This will allow you to more readily see what changes and improvements were made by the new research, among other things. 

The Critique 

Having summarized the state of the research to date in the literature review segment, you are now ready to critique the article that you have chosen. Use the following section to structure the critique:

1) A brief Summary describing the project. This summary should be a maximum of 1 page and should include: 

• What was done (method)
• To whom was it done (subjects)
• What was the hypothesis (Why was it done? What were the expected results)?
• What was found (Actual results)
• What conclusions were drawn (What do the authors say the results mean).

• Address the Strengths of the article. Here is where you praise the research (to the extent that you can). You will describe what makes this a good research paper and why.

• Address the Weaknesses of the paper. Identify any weaknesses in the research design and/or paper that are evident.

The following are some things to look for to help you decide whether the research and the paper is good. 

• Strength of the methodology (refer back to your literature for ideas on what is good methodology in this research area).
• Does the research advance the field? Or is it merely a replication of work already done? If it advances the field, what new knowledge does it bring?
• Clarity of data presentation (readability of graphs and tables).
• Appropriate statistics (were the right analyses done).
• Are the appropriate conclusions drawn? (some researchers are conservative and do not draw conclusions that are evident in their data; others are liberal and draw conclusions not supported by the data. Therefore, pay close attentions to what is said in the discussion).
• Clarity of writing. While the research itself may be good, its effectiveness may be obscured by bad writing (grammar, sentence structure, etc). These are minor problems but they should be mentioned if they significantly affect the paper.

4) Address Future Directions of the work (This can incorporated into the weaknesses section and headed Weakness and Future Directions) • Has the study left unanswered questions?
