Case Study:
Although Government has an image of inefficiency and ineffectiveness, there are examples of good innovation practice where solid solutions have been well-received e.g. contactless payment throughout Transport for London (TfL). There is an opportunity for the public sector to play a pivotal role in our economies future as they are in a position to engage people and positively control change. Imagine that you are an Innovation Manager employed within UK Government. Choose a ministerial or non-ministerial department to be employed in i.e. defence, education, criminal justice, international trade etc.
Questions:
Critically appraise Innovation within your chosen department: Catalogue the main services that they offer and map them onto the 4P’s model of Innovation Space (Tidd & Bessant). Compare and contrast each service clearly stating how ‘value’ is created.
2. Briefly, evaluate the major changes in the services delivered by your chosen department over the past 5-years i.e. new technology, changing market demands etc. Then in detail, evaluate how one of the services (of your own choosing) is embracing innovation. Use Coynes 3 part framework to highlight your chosen departments competencies and capabilities. Clearly specify their points of difference by creating a Competency Map.
3. Develop an Innovation Strategy detailing insights into the 'driving forces' for creative innovation for UK Government, in the future for all departments. Think 10 years ahead; what can you predict and envision? Consider how the Publics relationship with Government will change and where sources of innovation might originate.
