Assignment 1 is divided into two parts. Part A focuses on communication networks and Part  B is about network architectures. 

A. Communication Networks 

In this part of the assignment, the student must demonstrate their understanding of common  communication networks with suitable diagrams by answering the following topics:

1. Tom works as a business analyst in a reputed organisation in Melbourne. He accesses  the Internet using his laptop with a wireless connection to his company’s local area  network. He has recently downloaded a Web page from the Internet. Report all the  different networks possibly involved in the operation. 

2. With her new cell phone, Alice has just taken a snapshot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.  She decides to send this amazing snapshot to the email account of her friend Lisa  across the country. Analyse the scenario and discuss communication networks  involved. 

3. One of your friends has just arrived in Australia from Spain. He/she has planned to  visit Canberra city and has rented a car. He/she is using the car’s built-in navigational  system for driving directions to visit famous attractions in the city. Identify and discuss all the different networks possibly involved in this communication scenario. 

B. Network Architectures 

In this part of the assignment, the student must demonstrate their understanding of network  architectures answering the following topics: 

1. Reflect on the feedback for Part A and discuss how did it help you to accomplish the tasks for the assignment Part B.  

2. Discuss the OSI layered architecture with a suitable diagram, and the functioning of  each layer. 

3. Compare the OSI reference model with the TCP/IP protocol suite with a suitable  diagram. Which layers are missing from the TCP/IP protocol suite? Are they really  missing? Justify your answer. 

4. List and discuss some common applications found in the TCP/IP protocol suite.

5. Why error checking in performed at both data link and transport layers? Isn’t this  redundant?  

6. Report different wired mediums in terms of cost, speed, expandability & distance,  environment, and security.
