Highlights
Learning Outcomes to be Assessed:
From the module document, the following learning outcomes form the basis of the assessment of course work, which is a portfolio.
1. Methods and purposes of site and soil investigations are examined
2. Commercial foundations, retaining walls and trench supports are analysed and groundworks and temporary works are examined.
3. The performance of the superstructure, the structural behaviour of the main elements are calculated
4. Influences on the design and construction of external works are examined
Assessment Details:
You are employed by a CPE Contracting company on a Community Services centre building project. Every company of this size has a temporary works section who designs the temporary items to allow the work to proceed and you are currently assigned to that section.
Here are the information of the site:
The proposed scope of works under Shek Kip Mei (SKM) Community Services Centre project involves the construction of a community services centre (the Centre) with a construction floor area (CFA) of approximately 706 square metres (m2 ) at the podium of the SKM Estate Phase 3.
The site plan, general layout and typical sections of the site are attached hereunder:
2 Stories BASEMENT for CARPARK
Previously, some works have been carried out near the site and you may refer to the GI record for your design consideration. You should consult the GEO of CEDD/HKSAR for GI records of the project site and the existing buildings nearby.
You need to interpret the soils investigation information and develop temporary solutions which will overcome these challenges during the construction period, in some cases until permanent arrangements are put in place.
Task 1
a) Briefly explain the purpose of the site investigation, including an explanation of the reason that it is so essential to allow the design and construction process to proceed.
b) Identify how the soil invesitiagtion influences the design and construction of building foundation and external site formation works.
c) Identify the recommended foundations (steel H piles) for the community centre building and give the reasons why other options are less suitable.
Task 2
a) After the design review meeting, the Client advised that he would prefer to have a larger car parking floor area facing the hillside as an extension to the existing 2-floor car park basement. He asked for your opinion in form of a letter. Please propose earth retaining system for the nearby hill in your proposal.
b) Explain the common methods for basement excavation and propose with justification for your choice of excavation method for the underground car park.
