Bolt-on Solutions realised that it was time consuming and thus less productive for staff to have to leave the offices to get their own lunch each day as they frequently end up taking longer than an hour to do it due to their location (in a converted farm building at the end of a winding country wad on the edge of Bolton which is not Served by public transport). This was thus causing staff to have problems to actually get out and buy their own lunch each day. Some staff resorted to having sandwiches and others to bringing in and cooking their own lunch and other staff ended up resigning, citing the lack of nearby lunch options as a major factor. The company was thus keen to provide more and better lunch options for its staff and to address problems of staff leaving due to it and having unintentionally long lunch breaks. Thus they currently operates a lunch ordering service for its staff. The company deals with 3-2-1-GoForLuncht a single takeaway food provider that produces and delivers a wide range of lunch-friendly options from sandwiches. pasta and rice dishes and burgers along with sides, drinks and snacks. Every day by 11am, Charles in HR collects all the orders from employees who want a lunch takeaway that day. They either tell him via email or phone what they want or in person by just going to his desk (there is a printed menu leaflet on the staff room noticeboard). Charles then sends a spreadsheet over to 3-2-1GoForLunch! by email containing the day's order. The spreadsheet contains the employee's ID number, the name/email and the department they work for, and the item(s) (item code and description) they have ordered that day and any special requirements (such as no mushrooms or extra sauce etc.) and the total costof the order for that employee for that day. The spreadsheet also summarises the total cost of the order.
When the food is delivered Charles checks each person's lunch was included and then sends them an email to tell them their food has arrived and is waiting for them in the staff room. At the end of the month, just before payroll is calculated. Charles summaries the data from all the spreadsheets for the month to get the total cost of Orders per employee and this figure is deducted directly from their salary before they receive their pay and payslip. As you can probably realise, this is all quite time consuming for Charles. Thus Bolt-cm would like to computerise and automate this so that Charles does not need to spend so much time doing this each day. The eventual aim is for a web-based system that employees can just log into each day and order their lunch on which will then automatically send over their orders to 3.2-1-GoForLunch! without needing any input from Charles. But as a first step they need a database schema designed which will underpin that future system. Create that schema and normalise it to third normal form...
