nurse provided him with a take home stool specimen collection kit. Afterreceiving the results, Brendan was referred for a colonoscopy by his GP whichrevealed a left sided colon cancer and a bowel resection was scheduled.Brendan is an ex-smoker and has been diagnosed with early emphysema. HisGP also commenced Brendan on some anti-hypertensive medication (Ramiprildaily) for moderate hypertension.

Brendan is admitted to a small regional hospital for his bowel surgery which proceeds without any major complications. He returned to the ward at 1700 hours.It is now Day 1 post-operatively (the next day) and you are allocated to carefor Brendan on the morning shift. You listen to the morning report.Clinical handover (from the night duty RN who appears very tired and keepsyawning)“In bed 22 we have a 65-year old year old man who had a partialcolectomy and formation of colostomy yesterday. He’s under DrBarrett’s team and his surgery was uneventful. He has a morphine PCAand IV fluids running at 125 mL per hour. During the night, his blooddropped. I told him to cut down on the morphine but he saidthe pain was getting bad. He had a clinical review at 2am and we gavehim an IV fluid bolus of 250 mL. His IDC urine output has ben about25 mL per hour since 3am. His wound is dry and intact and his bellovachas drained about 300 mL of heamoserous fluid since yesterday. Hisstoma looks okay and there has been nothing in his drainage bag. Heis on 6 litres of oxygen via a Hudson mask and his oxygen saturationshave been good. There were lots of people visiting last night. I askedthem all to leave at 11pm but I think they will be back this morning.
