The Book Café located within the John Readings Bookstore is a privately-owned company (the Book Café Group – BCG) that until recently operated four Book Cafes in and around the Melbourne metropolitan region. In line with the strategic plan for John Readings, the company has recently expanded to 13 Cafes in bookstores across Victoria. The owner, chairman and CEO, Jim Murphy, has run the company for the past five years. He has operated various cafes and restaurants for most of the last 25 years and relies on his hands-on approach to hospitality operations. The book stores trade 7 am–11 pm daily, seven days a week and the Cafes are open for this time as well. The Cafes typically include seating for 40 customers, a children’s play area, a takeaway section, store manager’s office and stockroom. They sell drinks and light snacks all day with a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu running for these peak periods only. A range of special blend coffees is available for purchase and the café also provides a limited catering service as well as special order cakes. The café located in John Reading’s flagship bookshop in the centre of Sydney has been experiencing consistent growth in sales and numbers of customers over the last two years. This growth has led to a need for a second-floor manager who is able to manage customer complaints, take responsibility for higher level café operations and manage staff performance.
The current manager, Amy Trillet, works four days a week. Amy is a good manager, but when she’s not there on Fridays and alternate weekends, the café does not run as smoothly. Jim Murphy and his finance officer Jack Tan have agreed that it would be better for the business if one café manager worked from Monday to Saturday. They have provided you with the task of recruiting a full-time or part-time café manager (working Tuesday–Saturday or Wednesday–Saturday). In addition, they would like to create a new Team Leader position, someone who can work full time across both manager shifts to enable continuity between the two managers. Recruitment, selection, and induction processes must be undertaken in accordance with relevant external standards, such as legislation and codes of practice, and internal standards, such as organisational policies and procedures. BSBHRM405 Support the Recruitment, Selection and Induction of Staff Learner Assessment Pack Page 7 of 38 As these appointments are key in the development of the Book Café Group at John Readings Book Stores, Jim has indicated that he and Jack (the Finance and Operations Manager) would want to be involved in the selection of this second floor manager and team leader. Your job is to support the recruitment, selection and induction process and the first job is to organise the recruitment. You will need to review organisational documentation and undertake preliminary research into hiring another café manager and new team leader role. You will need to recommend the tasks and timelines required for recruitment and selection, provide job descriptions and advertisements for the roles and provide interview guide templates to the owners for approval. The new staff members need to be appointed within three months. Consultation notes The following are recorded notes from consultations that you’ve undertaken with management.
