This assessment’s instructions have been constructed using the CoffeeVille Case Study (see the links below); however, you may complete this assessment based on your own workplace, an organisation of your choice or on the CoffeeVille Case Study. Should you choose to use the CoffeeVille Case Study, you can access all CoffeeVille supporting documents by clicking on the following link: http://coffeeville.simulations.learn.com.au/. The ‘intranet’ tab on this site will direct you to the following CoffeeVille documents:
- Business Plan
- Operational Plan
- Policies and Procedures
- Employee Handbook.
A range of other documents are also within this intranet providing valuable background information about the operation of the business.
Part A: Written report – Separation and termination policies and procedures
1. CoffeeVille Operations Review
For this assessment, you are required to undertake a detailed review of the current Coffeeville business and operational documents in comparison to the ‘best practice’ standards of employment law as defined in the Fair Work Act 2009.
Carefully read the current CoffeeVille documents to determine any factors relating to separation, termination or dismissals of employees. Give consideration to issues that often lead to termination and dismissals, such as performance management, flexible work arrangements, warnings, discipline and serious misconduct.
Note: The Fair Work Ombudsman National Employment Standards, best practice guides, templates, checklists and factsheets will be very helpful in conducting your review. Once the review is completed, you must prepare a report for the business owners (Emma and Rufus Belcastran) detailing and explaining:
- any potential non-conformance issues in their current business documents
- positive aspects included and how they ensure validity and compliance
- recommendations for amendments that will ensure legal compliance and ‘benchmark’ standards
- a summary of relevant industrial relations and employee dismissal legislation.
