The Book Café located within the John Readings Bookstore is a privately-owned company (the Book Café Group (BCG)) that until recently operated four Book Cafés in and around the Melbourne metropolitan region. Twelve months ago, the company won an open tender to run the Book Cafés in John Readings bookstores throughout Australia and New Zealand. Because of this, the company has recently developed a new strategic plan that has seen the opening of 13 Cafés in John Readings bookstores across Victoria, with a further 138 stores opening in stages over the next 18 months, all with cafés included. Due to the extended hours of operation, each Bookstore Café requires a manager, and assistant manager, two chefs, two kitchen hands, two barista’s and four full-time waiting/service staff. The Cafés are supplemented by casual staff during peak service periods and supported by a regional HR Advisor. The Company currently employs 156 staff in Bookstores in Victoria with a further 850 staff operating other hospitality venues around Australia. Part of the company’s HR plan is to employ a further 1,656 staff mainly to operate the Book Cafés as they open. This will occur in three stages. Below are the current Book Café Groups recruitment and selection policies and procedures written progressively over 2023 - 2024. Scenario BCG CEO:
Jim Murphy, the CEO of BCG is an old-fashioned manager who has not had a lot to do with workforce planning and still relies on intuition and/or the right feel’ when recruiting staff to the company. He also has a strong belief that, in hospitality, especially on the front line, you just throw the new start into the role, and they sink or swim. Suffice to say he doesn't see the need for a lot of recruitment planning or an extended probationary period. Over his career, he has seen many potential employees not front up again after the first day and those that do are more often than not competent to do the job and he reckons that's all we need. ‘He says, 'We pretty much know after day one whether they're any good or not, it's not difficult!” However, post – Covid it has been harder to find the right staff and Jim is keen to ensure the new contract with John Readings goes smoothly so he is supportive of the HR team and the actions they recommend recruiting the people they need for the book cafés.
