Assessment description

Using the simulated business information provided in this task, and in response to a scenario (case study in appendix), provide solutions to the activities. During assessment, you will source, gather and review data and information and utilise formal and informal networks to identify and analyse business problems and issues. The information gathered from the scenario will be required to use for assessment task 2 and 3 in addition to the scenario information provided in task 2 and 3.

Assessment instructions

1. Read the scenario information provided under CoffeeVille – your brief in Appendix 1.

2. Review CoffeeVille simulated business documentation, including policies and procedures relating to communication, privacy and confidentiality of information to assist in understanding and managing information dissemination within the business. Coffeeville’s policies and procedures can be accessed through assessor/IBM simulation documents and resources.

3. Research management information and decision support systems based on the criteria established by CoffeeVille’s owners. You can use digital technologies to investigate new technologies and explore new ideas for the storage and dissemination of information.

4. Complete the following assessment task activities during the allowed assessment time.

5. The assessment task is due on the date specified by your assessor.

6. Any variations to this arrangement must be approved in writing by your assessor.

7. Submit your work with any required evidence attached. See specifications below for details.

8. Time allowed for the assessment task is 4 hours.

Specifications to submit

You must:

1. submit a written report that meets all information requirements

2. submit copies of relevant information you have researched about the management systems, attached to your report

3. complete the assessment and submit all documentation in the format and timeframe agreed with your assessor.

Performance objective
Candidate is to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to obtain information and identify and analyse business issues for a business.

Required resources
IBM (Victoria) provides the information management field of work and include access to:
• Simulated workplace documents and resources
• Relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes
• Relevant workplace documentation and resources
• Relevant technology and equipment
• Case studies and, where possible, real situations
• Interaction with others.
Your assessor will be looking for demonstration of your ability to:
• Source and analyse information for business decisions including:
o Identifying business problems and issues and related knowledge and data requirements
o Confirming the clear and relevant objectives for analysis of information
o Applying statistical analysis, sensitivity analysis and other techniques to draw conclusions relevant to decisions
o Ensuring sufficient valid and reliable information or evidence is available to support decisions
o Using formal and informal networks to source information not held in formal systems
o Identifying and accessing sources of reliable information
o Using technology as appropriate
o Consultation with stakeholders and specialists

Your Task
Complete the following activities:
A. Review staff and customer feedback and business performance data in appendices
B. Read the simulated workplace documents including policies and procedures.
C. Meet with your manager (assessor) in a role-play to discuss about the business and sources of information for business decisions.
D. Prepare a report for CoffeeVille’s owners based on their specified criteria as outlined in Appendix 1 and following requested content.
Report requirement (Content)
1. Summary of customer feedback and business performance data.
2. Source and gather reliable information from the scenario and identify issues and problems that the business is facing.
3. Testing techniques for information for validity and reliability.
4. Types and sources of information required to determine an appropriate course of action and support decision-making.
5. How to utilise formal and informal networks when identifying and analysing business problems or issues.
6. Types of systems that would be appropriate for their business.
7. How to develop and write complex texts using appropriate conventions and writing styles.
8. Effective use of digital technologies to manage business operations for strategic and operational purposes.
9. Objective/s for the analysis processes you plan to undertake.
10. Using statistical analysis, identify patterns and emerging trends and interpret their causes and effects on the business and.
a. Explain how decision support systems can assist you when analysing information and identifying trends and patterns.
b. Provide three pieces of relevant information from the scenario.

Submit the written report and any research information (if applicable) to your assessor as per the specifications on the following page.

Emma and Rufus Belcastran have decided to expand rather than contract their business. They have chosen option 3 and are in the process of planning their new take-home and meal delivery venture.

They also feel that they would have identified their recent business issue sooner if they had access to better information faster. As a result, they have asked you to investigate management systems for their business.

The business currently uses the following computerised systems:
1. Integrated food and beverage system:
a. Point of sale ordering system
b. Inventory control
c. Basic customer relationship management (CRM) system including customer database and loyalty options
2. Accounting system.

System criteria
They have established the following criteria.
1. Capable of communicating or integrating with the existing food and beverage and accounting systems if possible.
2. Provides real-time updates of key data in an easy-to-read and understandable format. They identified mainly financial data such as sales, revenue and costs as their key data.
3. Capable of preparing some customised reports. Most reports they require are standardised formats.
4. Able to provide data and information that will assist in short- and long-term decisionmaking.
5. Able to complete relevant statistical, sensitivity and quantitative analysis techniques such as those used to assist in evaluating the recent business issue.

Their overall goal is a system that will help them identify potential issues and make better, faster, more informed decisions.

They have no preferences about the type of system as they have not undertaken any research yet
